ROZHOVORY
Mighty Satyricon releases brand new album, Deep calleth upon Deep, and Hellmagazine had a very special chance to ask Frost some questions! Here you are.

Hello Frost. It´s nice to have a chance to ask you some of my questions again. At first tell me how you are. How did you spend summer?

- I have been taking some days totally off in order to recover after a very long and intense period working on Deep calleth upon Deep, but most days have been spent partly in the rehearsal place and partly out in nature.

The brand new record Deep Calleth upon Deep is going to be out very soon. How does it feel?

- Very good indeed. The album sounds and feels like we wanted it to; alive, fiery, diverse, vibrant, loaded, electric and magical.

It took like 4 years to release a new album. How long did the whole process of composing, writing and production take?

- Close to three years, I think. We took many different turns with the material over that period of time – or should I rather say the material took many different turns with us. It allowed for some maturation to take place, which I believe the album benefited from.

Your cover artwork is work entitled Kiss of Death by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. Am I correct? Why have you decided to choose this painting as your album cover?

- Correct. Satyr came across this rather unknown work by Munch in late spring, and realised how strikingly well it connected with Deep calleth upon Deep. It was as if it was made for the album; it is also a great, soulful and intriguing piece of art in itself.

What is your interpretation of the album title?

- It refers to how the album has been spawn from the deep recesses of our being, and how it speaks to the depth of the listener.

Fans and listeners of Satyricon could hear the single, the title track of the new record. They must be very excited. Could you tell them what kind of album to expect?

- I partly answered that in an earlier question – I can add that listeners can expect a highly exciting and happening album, but also one that is demanding attention and presence on the listener’s part.

On the release day, 22 September, there will be a release party on the rooftop of the KLP Building in Barcode in Oslo. You could promote this unique event. How to get the tickets? I guess it´s going to be pretty much limited.

- I advise you to look for information on a Satyricon site (FB or webpage for instance). It is going to be a rather unusual event, all right, and the nature of that show dictates a limited amount of attendees.

There are usually also people from all over the world at your shows, especially the special shows like this one will definitely be. What do you think about it?

- We are thankful that people are willing to travel far to see us live. That speaks of dedication in itself, and we do always appreciate dedicated fans.

Many people say Satyricon isn´t black metal anymore. They say you have created like new genre, something unique, your own style. What´s your opinion?

- I believe we have definitely created an expression of our own, and we have always defied limitations and conventions. We are still black metal the way I understand it, and more now than we have ever been. I think that the general misunderstanding that is sadly widespread in this genre, is that highly specific and rigid standards and conventions defines what it is all about. In reality, it should be about attitude, feeling and spirit, not about corpsepaint and blastbeats.

What does art mean to you?

- Something that nurtures or moves the spirit; usually also something that comes from that realm.

I´ve heard you would like to record a cover album. Is it true? If so, can you reveal any details?

- We will do that, and did actually initiate the project a few years ago, but then we got started working on Deep calleth upon Deep, which obviously had a higher priority for us. We will return to the cover album when it feels due. That is all I would like to reveal about it at this point.

What kind of project would you like to be part in the future?

- Impossible to say. Deep calleth upon Deep and the tour that will follow it’s release feels like it fills our present and near future completely, and at the moment it is hard to see beyond that scope.

Last words, something to tell to our readers, your fans?

- Hope to see you out on the road. Hail Hell.

Thank you very much for your time, hope to see you soon on tour!
