ROZHOVORY
Tarja Turunen, one of the most popular metal singers has just released her fourth full-length album called “The Shadow Self“ together with the prequel album “The Brightest Void“. Hellmagazine got the chance to talk to Tarja not only about her brand new record.

Hello Tarja. It´s so nice to talk to you again after three years. Last time we phoned each other in August 2013. What has changed in your life in these three years?

It’s been an incredible joyride. Actually I have been extremely busy in the last 3 years and seen that finally there is a space in the world for my music. I don’t need to explain myself anymore in a way that I needed to do earlier. I have found the identity, the sound and style as an artist and this feels really good. From the personal side, we moved away from Buenos Aires and we are trying to establish ourselves to Europe next year and I am a proud mommy of 4 years old one.

You´ve just completed your summer shows, festivals, very special performances, you released two albums, two videos, you performed live with Sharon of Within Temptation twice or Alissa of Arch Enemy, you visited Asia with your music for the first time. How does it feel? It´s been very successful summer, hasn´t it?

It really has been truly successful summer, but on the other hand it has taken it‘s dime. I am currently trying to regain my strength and energies. I knew in advance that this spring and summer is going to be hard physically, but I never thought I might be this tired at the end of the day. Luckily there is time now for rest and family. I am enjoyning myself at the moment! But I have to say that I am very happy for what has happened and how the people have recieved my new album and work.

Let´s compare The Shadow Self with your previous work. What´s the biggest difference on your latest record from your point of view? Have you changed the way you compose music for example?

The development from my previous album to The Shadow Self feels just very natural to me. I have relaxed in the meantime and felt comfortable and I believe all this positive feeling of mine is heard on the new record in every way. The album sounds good and the song writing is better from my opinion. It’s just that I have found a great team of people working with me and I am writing more music on my own nowadays. Everything in this huge piece of puzzle seem to be in it’s place finally. The Shadow Self is heavier album than Colours in the dark is. It is also most versatile album I have done so far in my career with it’s orchestral, cinematographic songs.

On each of your album there´s a cover song. How long have you been carrying an idea in your head about the cover song and according to what do you choose a cover song to record for the album?

Some of the songs I have covered, have been long in my mind and others are popping up along the way. The songs I decide to cover always touch me in different ways personally. Every time while working on each song, I try to make it sound and feel like one of my own songs. Still I want to pay attention that the original is respected.

I have to say I really like your covers. It´s always like your own songs as you said. Have you ever thought of recording the entire album only with rock/metal covers?

I haven’t really thought about it, but I am sure it might well be a fun project. Why not one day!

New world tour is in front of you. Will the “Shadow Shows“ bring something that we have never seen on your shows before?

The set list obviously will be a new, refreshed one since I am presenting and promoting my newest work. The outfits and the stage set up will also have new designs.

As you have already mentioned, you and your family are moving to Europe, to Spain. What did lead you to do that and how many things might change in your life with this step?

It’s all because our little girl needs to start her school and I want to continue touring. If we lived in Buenos Aires, I would rarely see my family. I don’t like to be weeks away from my loved ones. Still my work is more based in Europe, so that’s why we are moving. My family can come to visit me during my tours easily if we are living closer to the acitivities.

What will you miss the most about living in Argentina?

I felt free and happy in Argentina. I will miss my friends, the family, the local food and the beautiful city of Buenos Aires. I loved living there for all these years. Nevertheless because of our family relations, we will always be connected with Argentina, so that will not change.

You´re using several languages everyday while communicating with your family. I´ m interested in what language you and your husband use to talk to Naomi.

I talk in Finnish to her, my husband talks in Spanish. She understands and speaks also English.

The situation in Europe is not the best I ´d say as well. You always express regret on your social sites after the terrorist attacks. What´s your opinion on that, I mean the situation in the world?

We are living hard times and there is a change going on currently everywhere. I just hope the decisions for future are made cleverly and for everybody’s good.

I know you´ve been busy with the new album but can you reveal any information about the project called “Outlanders“ that you´ve been working on couple of years actually? What to expect?

As you can see, I haven’t been in a hurry with that project. We have recorded many songs and we are pretty close to the end of the production for the album. I am still not sure when and how to work on the release for this project, so I have to give it a bit time. I have been super busy with other things, but I am sure that time will tell.

What about the “Beauty and the Beat“ project. Is it over?

I am not working with Mike Terrana anymore, so this project as it was, is over. For sure you will see me doing other kinds of classical and symphonic projects in the future.

You had your birthday couple of days ago so I´d like to wish you all the best. And tell me how do you usually celebrate your birthdays?

Thank you very much! I am not really celebrating my birthdays at all. Last time I celebrated birthdays was when I turned 30 and next time probably will be next year again...I love to have my loved ones with me on that day and have some fun with them.

Let´s imagine you can organize a party and you could invite whoever you want, who would you invite and why?

I would definitely gather all my friends from all over the world together. It would be very special because I rarely can see them and I miss them a lot. But if it is a real friendship, the distance and time won’t matter.

Can we expect you to perform in Slovakia with the new album?

I am sure you can! I believe there has already been some talks about the shows in Slovakia. You just need to be a bit more patience before the announcement.

Anything to tell to our readers in Slovakia?

I would like to thank you all for the support and love you have been giving me throughout the years already. I surely hope to be able to give a little bit of that love back to you with my art. See you soon in Slovakia!

Thank you for your time and this interview. All the best with your new album!

Pleasure! Thank you very much!

Love, Tarja
