Band that is rookie in music scene but with its debut album, it
kicked up dust more than anybody else. Their debut album - “Mercy &
Misery” was evaluated very well, but … more about band and other stuff tells
us guitarist Rene Bogdanski.
It is
possible to call you rookie on music scene. What was date when the band was
born?
The Very End
was a long time ago as a side project. First irregular meetings start
happening in training room in 2003. We want just one thing - to do music
along our primary bands as Night in Gales and Destillery. All without any big
expectations. After a time, we realize that there is big musician chemistry
and we understood each other. Year 2005 was year when The Very End was born.
We recorded our first demo and played our first concerts as a band. We
started to take it seriously and The Very End started to be our primary band.
Our second demo - “Soundcheck for your funeral” was recorded in 2008 and
thanks to this demo we signed contract with Dockyard1 label and recorded our
debut CD “vs. Life”. After this, our label bankrupted and because of this we
have to finance our CD “Mercy & Misery” by ourselves. After this, we
start to cooperate with SPV label. Now we are waiting in pressure what comes
with future…

I expect that
there were a lot of possible band names. Why you choose name The Very End?
What it stands for?
We have no
name in first years, because we weren’t ordinary band. We were just some kind
of trial project. When we started to take it seriously, there was question
how should we call our band and in this time, everyone was thinking about it.
The Very End name was Björn´s idea. We wanted name that sounds metal way, but
won´t say correct genre we are playing. We wanted name was similar to our
lyrics as well. This name was the best choice. And this name got many
possible interpretations as well. It is what we like about this name as well.
It is reason, why I won´t tell you what does the name means…

Before
releasing of your new album, you released two demo albums. What response does
those demoes have?
Both demoes
got really good response, from fans as well as from journalists. For example,
“2K5” was declared as Rookie tip in German Legacy
Magazine and “Soundcheck for your funeral” was
demo of month in Metal Hammer magazine. This was probably one of the reasons why we get our
first record offer.
Is it
possible to get those demoes nowadays? Or are you planning to release them
sometimes as a bonus material?
We are still
selling few copies on concerts but we have just few left now and we weren’t
planning to release them again. We record again “The Black to Come” in new
version for “vs. Life” album. If we sometimes want to re-release those
demoes, we put them on some album as bonus material. But…for example…two
songs from “Soundcheck for your Funeral” - songs “The Loss Theory” and
“Flatline” are on “vs. Life” album as well. We still don’t know if we record
other material from demoes again, but it is highly possible. Sometimes, we
play this stuff on concerts.
You are
releasing your debut album “Mercy & Misery”. This album is extremely
good. How are you satisfied with this album?
Thank you for
compliment. And…the f act, that it is our debut album isn’t correct. It´s
actually our second album. I don’t know if our first album – “vs. Life” was
released in Slovakia…so…yeah, it´s possible that “Mercy & Misery” is our
first album released in Slovakia. We are highly satisfied with result. There
were moments during recordings, when we thought that we can make it better,
of course. But you have to end recording once. Otherwise, you can never end.
I think that
it is far better album if we compare it with our first album and we are on
good way to find our own style. This is important for me as musician and
music listener as well. It is great, that response from journalists is
positive and lot of them have real problem to assign us to a style. It all is
telling us, that we are following good path.
It is
possible, that working with producer Waldemar Sorychta made a lot of good
work. How do you feel about working with him?
Working with
Waldemar was great and it moves us on as band and musically as well. Without
him, our new album is much different. There was a lot of work on
pre-production when Waldemar made a lot of changes in song structure. On the
beginning, we have to accustom that someone who is not part of band is making
changes in our songs. But finally, we realized that changes he done made our
album better.
Topic of the
texts. What events or things are you singing about?
Topics are
variable. Some are very personal things; some are political, such as “A Hole
in the Sun”, for which we recorded video as well. It would be able to see in
few days and it is talking fictive anti-war story. We are trying to get our
texts to some kind of metal level - it can goes really funny way sometimes.
Generally, we write lyrics after the music is done. After the music is done,
Björn is trying to made lyrics well connected to music.
Are you
composing as band or is it matter of few members?
The Very End
is matter of every member from its beginning. Everyone can be creative. It
was a bit hard when we were starting because most of bands have songs written
by one or two members. Our band is different. There are no rule except one -
in the end, every member have to like it. Probably, it is why our music is
such varied. Creation of songs is also very different. Some were created in
training room, some completely in computer. Before recording, there is always
original product when we train every song once more. A lot of times, after
this re-playing, we make two songs from one and remade some of them. For
example, parts of “Rat Nation” and “For all things undone” were one song once
and we completely split it.
Album and the
tour are always walking hand in hand. With which band(s) are you going to
tour the stages?
Our label
wants to make European tour and we appreciate it. But there is nothing
confirmed yet. I´ll be happy to tour Slovakia in 2011 as well.
Music isn’t
still your full time job. What else are you doing?
I am
businessman and I have agency Social Media Beratung and I was journalist
originally. Our singer – Björn is illustrator and he is doing graphic design.
He made design for a lot fame bands. Bassist Marc is studying on teaching
school and drummer Daniel and guitarist Volker were working in social sphere.
What else
except music do you like to do?
This is
theme, where I can talk just about myself. I have not a lot free time. I
spend a lot of my time in work and with band. I am trying to do sports
regularly. I am big fan of Star Wars and comics since I was child. I got
really big collection. Besides it, since my study years I am interested in
First and Second World War and National Socialism in Germany.

Thank you for
your time, you spent for our readers. Do you want to tell them something in
the end of this interview?
