Relatively eccentric and unique band at the same time - Deathstars. Preparations for the tour with Rammstein are in full swing and we get few words from the band's bass player - Jonas "Skinny Disco" Kangur. What we find out is in the following lines. And there's more than enough of it ...

Starts, even with image such as yours could be quite difficult. Don’t you have problems in the beginning of your career?

If we did, we never noticed. Since the band comes from the underground Death/Thrash-metal scene where corpse-paint is common, it wasn’t new to us using make up.

First of all, let´s talk about new album a bit. You decided to release “Best of album” after 3 studio albums – it´s quite uncommon decision. Why you decided to do this that soon?

We wanted to have a compilation for the potential new listeners on the upcoming tour with Rammstein. There’s a lot of people that will hear us for the first time and it’s a great way to give them a quick update on who we are and what we sound like.

Who was choosing songs for this album?

We did. And for the first time we all agreed on what songs to choose.

There would be 2 new songs on this “Best of album”. Can you introduce us those two new songs?

The 2 new songs are a preview of our upcoming studio album that we’re working on. Our newly released single “Metal” is the kind of song you’ll most likely lose your drivers license listening to. It’s a lot harder and much more primitive then what we usually do. The second song, “Death is Wasted on the Dead” is more of a typical “Deathstars”-song, if there is such thing.

How are you writing new songs? Do you need any special environment or atmosphere for it? What is your inspiration?

We only need time and it really helps if we get to work in a peaceful environment. It’s for example very hard to write music on tour with a lot of people running around being drunk. The inspiration varies where it comes from but the lyrics is always about ourselves.

Are you already working on new studio album? Any plans, ideas, anything you can reveal?

Yes as I said, we are working on a new album and have already recorded some tracks. We still have about half of the album to complete when we get back from the tour.

You were announced as support act for Rammstein´s “Made in Germany 2011 Tour”. How do you feel when you imagine that you´ll play with such legendary band as Rammstein?

It’s of course a big honour being invited by such a great band. We have talked about doing a tour together for some years now and I’m so happy it finally came through.

On your Myspace, there is option to “Bring Deathstars to our city”. Are you planning tour according to this voting?

I don’t know how that thing works actually. I don’t even know where to see the result of the voting, but it would be a fun thing to do.

You got lot in common with military stuff – costumes, some names of songs (for example Blitzkrieg), logo looks to me a bit military look… But your music is telling something totally different. What is your connection with that military stuff?

We always liked the look of old military uniforms and we like the idea of showing the band as one unit. And what better way is there then to dress up like a small army.

I heard about your parties after concerts. What is the worst thing you experienced on tour?

It must have been the time when we did LSD and was locked inside the tourbus on the car deck on a ferry between Finland and Estonia. I don’t think the band has ever experienced such darkness.

There are tons of female fans screaming and yelling on concerts and it nearly getting crazy. What are your feelings when you see that you are some kind of idols to them?

I get all warm and fuzzy inside. We have always liked girls a lot and we really appreciate that kind of behaviour... haha!

What was the weirdest and creepiest fan you ever met?

Haha, we have quite a few weird fans. We’ve had people showing up outside our homes, people who wants you to hit them or burn them with cigarettes and sometime guys who wants us to have sex with their girlfriends. It’s weird but we’re getting used to it by now.

What gets you to image you got nowadays?

Well, in the latest video we wanted to try something new. We wear classic 70’s motorcycle leather jackets, tight black jeans and skull-make up. We wanted to look like Ramones from hell.

On concerts you are very extravagant; you got very specific style of whole performance. How do you look like and how do you act in normal life out of stage (Well … if there is something such as normal life in this kind of showbiz.)

It depends but I would say that we don’t walk around with that much make-up normally. Jeans and leather always works, on stage and in court.

What are your hobbies when you got some free time?  (once again, if there is some … )

My only hobby is music if you don’t count beer. I play a lot of different instruments and styles of music. Since a few years back I’ve been playing a lot of banjo and pedal-steel. It’s fun to do something completely different.

What interpret makes you decide to make music? Why?

I don’t really understand the question. But I make music because it’s my way of therapy. I don’t need a shrink or pills.

Can you imagine yourself doing something different? You know, if you wouldn’t be involved in music industry.

No, that’s very hard to imagine. My life is very influenced by music on every level. But I’m interested in languages, so maybe I would become an interpreter.

What does music mean to you?

A lot, I get crazy if I don’t have music around me.

What do you like to succeed with band or in your personal life?

As long as I get to play music I’m happy. Of course it would be fun if the band grew to become a huge success. But I’m happy about what we already have achieved.

You got a lot of horror elements in your performance. Let´s turn it a bit around. What is your worst nightmare?

Get stuck in a narrow cave-tunnel inside a mountain.

Thank you …
