Power metalová kapela z Barcelony KILMARA vydáva svoj epický nový štúdiový album „Journey to the Sun“. Album je opísaný ako „dobrodružstvo epických rozmerov“. Podarilo sa nám vyspovedať niektorých členov kapely, ktorí vám vyrozprávajú príbeh za novou nahrávkou a nielen to. Tak poďme na to!
Hola chicos, ¿cómo están? Dúfam, že je to správne!
John: Hola! Áno, správne a darí sa nám skvele, tieto dni sú pre kapelu neuveriteľné, je nám potešením vás pozdraviť.
Je mi potešením mať túto úžasnú príležitosť s vami hovoriť. Čo je nového v Barcelone? Je Sagrada Familia konečne dokončená? Haha
Didac: Hahahaha! V prvom rade by som sa ti chcel poďakovať za tento rozhovor, osobne ich nedávam veľa, nie som veľkým fanúšikom rozhovorov, celkom ma to stresuje. Takže začnem s tými najjednoduchšími otázkami a áno, Sagrada Familia je po 140 rokoch takmer dokončená! hahaha.
Nový album, „Journey to the Sun“, vyšiel pred pár dňami. Aký je to pocit?
Didac: Úžasný, musím sa štípať, keď o tom hovorím.
Podeľte sa o niektoré zaujímavé momenty súvisiace s procesom komponovania, nahrávania, natáčania videoklipov a podobne. Čo stojí za zmienku, na čo nechcete zabudnúť?
Eric: Pokiaľ ide o moje obľúbené momenty z celého putovania za „cestou k slnku“, musím sa zamerať na dva konkrétne. Prvým bolo nahrávanie videoklipu k piesni „Chances“, ktoré bolo začiatkom roku 2024. Predchádzajúci rok bol pre mňa hrozný, ale byť schopný stráviť čas s členmi kapely, ktorí si vás vážia a akceptujú takých, akí ste, bolo veľmi hojivé na mentálnej úrovni. Povedal som im: „Chlapci, proste si predstavte, že tam kamera nie je, a buďte sami sebou, myslím, že to bude kľúč.“ A na videoklipe je naozaj vidieť, ako je Kilmara zohratá rodina hudobníkov.
A čo sa týka albumu, je tam jedna pieseň, „Liberticide“, ktorej by som chcel, aby ľudia, najmä bubeníci, venovali osobitnú pozornosť, pretože to bola pre mňa najťažšia pieseň na zahranie. Technicky náročná, ale silná pieseň, ktorá bola nahratá pomerne prirodzene v Carlesovom štúdiu a potom sa ukázala byť najkomplikovanejšia. Keď Carles stlačil „record“, chytil som sa tejto piesne s určitou dávkou hnevu a úcty a skončila ako jedna z mojich obľúbených na celom albume.
Prečo práve tento názov? Aj keď jedným dychom poviem, že sa mi veľmi páči.
John: Dani mal tento nádherný názov pre pieseň a táto pieseň pre nás tiež veľa znamenala, pretože je to prvá, ktorú sme zložili pre album, počínajúc počiatočnou myšlienkou začať niečím, čo malo vzťah k nášmu predchádzajúcemu albumu, „Across the real of time“, pretože hudobne existuje spojenie s názvom „Purging Flames“, ktorý album otváral. Chceli sme začať túto novú prácu silnou piesňou, ktorá by pripomenula poslucháčovi, odkiaľ pochádzame, ale zároveň piesni dala nové detaily kompozičných a producentských aranžmánov, ktoré ukazujú, kam smerujeme.
Prešli sme si aj naozaj ťažkými časmi počas celého obdobia, kým sme na tomto albume pracovali, takže názov je našou osobnou cestou k niečomu, čo sa zdalo nemožné.
Didac: Áno, Dani hovorí, že je to metafora pre život ako cestu. Slnko je teda cieľ a každý by si mal premyslieť, čo je pre neho cieľom. Smrť? Posmrtný život? Ničota? Čokoľvek, na čom sa môžeme zhodnúť, je, že dôležitá je cesta a všetko, čo sa počas cesty deje, však? To je všetko.
Môže to znamenať, že by ste tiež chceli opustiť túto planétu? Ujsť?
Didac: Len keby to bolo na cestu do „Restaurant at the End of the World“… čo je názov druhej knihy „The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy“ od Douglasa Adamsa, ktorú mimochodom ešte stále nemám prečítanú.
Album je opísaný ako “tvrdší a silnejší“ než predchádzajúce nahrávky. Môžete konkretizovať špecifické zmeny vo vašom skladateľskom alebo nahrávacom procese, ktoré prispeli k tejto zmene či evolúcii?
John: Na rozdiel od predchádzajúcich albumov sme tentoraz pracovali s jasnejšou predstavou hudobného trhu, na ktorom sme sa chceli umiestniť. Pocítili sme istú nostalgiu po dobrom európskom power metale z konca 90. rokov a začiatku 21. storočia, kde bolo vtedy cítiť veľa osobnosti v kapelách, a ďaleko od toho, aby sme zostali v tej nostalgii, sme sa pokúsili prispieť našou ´updatetovanou´ víziou tej doby. Naším zámerom bolo vytvoriť moderný heavy power album, rozmanitý a s vlastnou osobnosťou kapely. K tomuto vývoju veľmi prispel náš nový gitarista a producent Carles Salse.
Čo vás viedlo k výberu Carlesa Salsea a Seeba Levermanna ako producentov pre album a ako sa ich individuálne štýly dopĺňali pri formovaní zvuku albumu?
John: Výber Carlesa Salsea bol prirodzený, pretože ako náš hlavný gitarista a aranžér sa podieľal na celom procese predprodukcie. Carles mal jasno v tom, kam chceme smerovať s našim novým zvukom. Keď sme dostali finálny mix, napadlo nám osloviť Seeba Levermanna, aby albumu dodal potrebnú váhu a pevnosť. Seeb je jedným z našich súčasných obľúbených producentov a bolo naozaj vzrušujúce mať jeho pomoc pri našej novej práci.
Koncept albumu čerpá inšpiráciu z herní z konca 80. rokov. Ako toto nostalgické prostredie ovplyvnilo témy a celkovú atmosféru albumu?
Didac: Na túto otázku by som radšej odpovedal sám, pretože je to moja kresba, hahaha. Keď sme sa zamerali na obal albumu, napadol mi filmový plagát Star Wars, ale aj plagát Stranger Things, takže artwork je zmesou týchto dvoch referencií. Okrem mladého Erica pochádzame z generácie 80./90. rokov a tieto odkazy sú dnes veľmi prítomné aj pre generáciu mileniálov. Nesmieme zabudnúť, že rodičmi tejto generácie sú práve tí, ktorí žili v tej dobe. Bol som závislý na automatoch! Uprednostňoval som ich pred vyučovaním v škole, čo hnevalo mojich rodičov hehehe.
A áno, sú tam aj prvky z každej piesne, čo mi umožnilo použiť obal na vytvorenie singlov alebo vnútra CD bookletu. Vyzerá to dobre, čo povieš?
Spolupráca s Danielom Heimanom z Lost Horizon na skladbe „Take Me Back“ je významnou udalosťou. Ako k tejto spolupráci došlo a aké to bolo pracovať s takým renomovaným spevákom?
Didac: Túžili sme po spolupráci s veľkým menom a Daniel má tú auru legendárneho powermetalového speváka, sme veľmi radi, že sa rozhodol s nami spolupracovať! Je tiež veľmi profesionálny v časoch, keď sme sa potrebovali stretnúť atď. Myslím si, že sa veľmi dobre dopĺňajú, mohli by spolupracovať len oni dvaja a nazvať projekt „The Daniel’s“ alebo niečo podobné. Hahahaha.
John: Daniel Heiman je jedným z našich hrdinov z tej scény 90. rokov, o ktorej sme hovorili. Pieseň je o spomienke na zosnulého umelca, o tom, ako zakaždým, keď počujete jeho hlas na nahrávke, je to ako keby ste sa ho snažili priviesť späť k životu.
Myslím si, že celý koncept sa s Heimanom veľmi dobre zladil, pretože v poslednej dobe nemal veľa hudobnej aktivity, ale radi ho počúvame, kedykoľvek môžeme, a samozrejme by sme sa radi tešili na návrat Lost Horizon.
„Journey to the Sun“ skúma témy jednoty, hľadania pravdy a prekonávania obmedzení. Môžete podrobnejšie rozviesť hlbší význam a posolstvo za týmito témami?
John: Dani je ten, kto píše všetky texty, na základe svojich osobných skúseností alebo na základe spoločenských informácií, ktoré ho obklopujú. Začal písať texty počas globálnej pandémie, opustil Španielsko, aby hľadal lepšiu príležitosť v USA, keď všetko prepuklo. Za piesňami sa skrýva silná spoločenská kritika mediálnej manipulácie. Je tam výzva pre svet, aby sa zjednotil v boji za pravdu, ako aj ďalšie veľké univerzálne pocity.
Ako sa „Journey to the Sun“ líši od vašich predchádzajúcich albumov z hľadiska hudobného štýlu, lyrického obsahu alebo celkovej umeleckej vízie?
John: Na všetkých našich albumoch sme sa snažili zostať autentickí v našom štýle, ale zároveň sme sa snažili alebo skúmali rôzne smery. S naším predchádzajúcim albumom sme našli určitú stabilitu alebo istotu v štýle Melodic Prog Power a na tomto albume chceme v tomto štýle upevniť naše základy. Myslím si, že je to dielo s jasnejšou víziou, homogénnejšie ako pri predchádzajúcich príležitostiach, kde sme sa snažili poslucháča zmiasť. V tejto novej práci všetci vynikáme najmä na svojich nástrojoch a Dani má oveľa väčší význam vo svojich speváckych kvalitách. Je to veľmi talentovaný spevák a snažíme sa to vylepšiť tak, ako si zaslúži. Keď sa k kapele pridal Carles Salse (je to nováčik), veľa sme sa rozprávali o kapelách a hudobnom štýle, ktorý sa nám páči. Zistili sme, že existuje veľmi veľký bod prepojenia s kapelami z konca 90. rokov a začiatku 21. storočia. Chceli sme odraziť zvukovými zábleskami tú lásku a úctu k Heavy/Power tej doby, pričom sme mu dali našu vlastnú osobnosť a úplne čerstvú a súčasnú produkciu. Je tam určitá nostalgia, ale nesnažili sme sa zmeniť to na retro párty. Vizuálne sme pracovali na nápadoch z filmov ako Stranger Things, Star Wars alebo Tron. Na celom tomto umeleckom koncepte pracujeme od roku 2021.
Aké sú vaše očakávania ohľadom prijatia albumu publikom a aký to môže mať vplyv na vašu kariéru?
John: Chcel by som byť schopný prestať byť večnou undergroundovou kapelou a byť schopný vyraziť na turné na podporu albumu v Európe, Ázii, Latinskej Amerike a USA. Dúfam, že tento album nám dá skutočné možnosti rásť ako kapela.
Album je opísaný ako „dobrodružstvo epických rozmerov“. Môžete zdôrazniť zvlášť náročný alebo obohacujúci aspekt procesu nahrávania alebo skladania?
John: S písaním tohto albumu sme začali v roku 2021 a zabralo nám to takmer 3 roky práce s mnohými komplikáciami, takže názov je perfektný, pretože sa to zdalo ako nemožná cesta, ktorá mala ukončiť stabilitu kapely. Nakoniec sa nám to podarilo! Bolo tam veľa kreativity a pri aranžovaní skladieb sme sa výborne zabavili. Vždy sa snažíme, aby každá pieseň mala svoju vlastnú podstatu. Je ťažké to dosiahnuť, ale myslím si, že sa nám to podarilo. Piesne, ktoré sa od seba líšia, ale v rámci jedného hudobného štýlu. Každá pieseň je cesta a každá pieseň má svoj epický moment. Myslím si, že sme splnili svoj sľub.
Máte s albumom ešte nejaké ďalšie plány?
John: Radi by sme odohrali čo najviac koncertov. Máme tiež plány začať písať ďalší album.
A čo vaše plány na rok 2025? Turné?
John: Dostali sme niekoľko ponúk na organizované turné ako predkapela, budeme vážne zvažovať všetky návrhy a dúfame, že sa to konečne podarí.
Uvidíme vás v tomto roku aj na Slovensku?
John: Slovenskú heavy metal scénu poznáme veľmi dobre a metalisti sú skvelí. Uplynulo príliš veľa času, odkedy sme naposledy hrali na Slovensku, na MORE THAN FESTe 2016, a tešíme sa, že sa čoskoro vrátime späť. Momentálne sa koná niekoľko skvelých festivalov a dúfam, že nás zavolajú zahrať.
Prišli sme až k záveru. Chcete niečo odkázať svojim fanúšikom u nás?
John: Od roku 2009 sme v Slovensku vydali 4 skvelé albumy, a aj na tomto je kúsok Slovenska, pretože sme nahrávali niektoré gitarové a basové pasáže v bývalých Grapow Studios vo Zvolenskej Slatine. Takisto náš drahý priateľ Mayo Petranin, súčasný spevák Niakary a Castaway, spolupracoval na všetkých doplňujúcich vokáloch. Mnoho pomoci nám tiež poskytol ďalší slovenský hudobník, bubeník Valerio Chroma, ktorý nám láskavo umožnil použiť jeho krásny bubnový set na nahrávanie. V Kilmara máme veľa lásky k Slovensku a naozaj sa tešíme, že opäť uvidíme všetkých našich priateľov.

Barcelona-based power metal act KILMARA release their epic, new studio album ‚Journey to the Sun‘. The album is described as an „adventure of epic proportions.“ We managed to interview some of the members of the band who will narrate the story behind the new record and not only that. Here we go!
Hola chicos, ¿cómo están? Hope it ‚s correct!
John: Hola! Hi, yes, the greeting is correct, we are doing great, these days are incredible for the band, it is a pleasure to greet you.
It’s my pleasure to have this amazing opportunity to talk to you. What’s new in Barcelona? Is Sagrada Familia finally completed? Haha
Didac: Hahahaha! First of all I would like to thank you for this interview, I personally don’t answer many, I’m not a big fan of this and it makes me nervous. So I’m going to answer the easy ones starting with the easiest, La Sagrada Familia is almost finished after 140 years! hahaha.
New album, „Journey to the Sun“ was released a few days ago. Are you excited?
Didac: A lot, “I touch myself” thinking about it.
Share some interesting moments related to the process of composing, recording, video shooting and so on. What is worth mentioning, something you don’t want to forget about, for example.
Eric: As for my favorite moments from the entire Journey to the Sun journey, I have to focus on two in particular. The first was the recording of the video for Chances, which was in early 2024. The previous year was awful for me, but being able to hang out with your bandmates, who appreciate and accept you for who you are, was very healing on a mental level. I said to them, „Guys, just pretend the camera’s not there and be ourselves, I think that’s going to be the key.“ And you can really see in the video itself, how Kilmara is a close-knit family of musicians.
And speaking of the album, there is one song, Liberticide, that I want people, especially drummers, to pay special attention to, because it was the most difficult song for me to play and relearn. A technically difficult but powerful song, which was recorded relatively naturally in Carles‘ studio and then turned out to be the most complicated. When Carles pressed „record“, I grabbed this song with a certain amount of anger and respect, and it ended up being one of my favorites on the entire album.
Why this title? I really like it though.
John: Dani had this wonderful title for a song, and this song meant a lot to us as well since it’s the first one we composed for the album, starting from the initial idea of starting with something that had a relationship with our previous album, „Across the real of time“, because, musically speaking, there is a connection with the title Purging Flames that started the album, we wanted to start this new work with a powerful song, that would remind the listener where we come from, but also giving the song new details of compositional and production arrangements that show where we are going.
We also went through some really tough times during the whole time we were working on this album, so the title is our personal journey towards something that seemed impossible.
Didac: Yes, Dani says that it is a metaphor for life as a journey. So the Sun is the end, and everyone should think about what the end is for each one. Is it a goal? Death? The afterlife? Nothingness? Whatever, what we can agree on is that the important thing is the journey and everything that happens during the journey, right? That ‚s it.
Can it mean you would like to leave this planet also? To escape?
Didac: Only if it’s to go to the „Restaurant at the End of the World“… which is the title of the second book of „The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy“ by Douglas Adams, which by the way I have NOT read yet.
The album is described as „heavier and more powerful“ than previous work. Can you pinpoint specific changes in your songwriting or recording process that contributed to this evolution?
Didac: For me, Kilmara sounds more Power Metal than ever, “heavier” of heavy metal and “powerful” of Power. In terms of sound, this album has been dedicated many more hours of production than previous ones, so it sounds heavier and more powerful in quality.
John: Unlike previous albums, this time we worked with a clearer idea of the music market in which we wanted to position ourselves. We feel a certain nostalgia for the good European Power Metal of the late 90s and early 21st century, where there was a lot of personality in the bands of that time, and far from staying in that nostalgia, we have tried to contribute our updated vision of that time. Our idea was to make a modern Heavy Power album, varied and with the band’s own personality. Our new guitarist and producer Carles Salse has contributed a lot to this development.
What led you to choose Carles Salse and Seeb Levermann as producers for „Journey to the Sun,“ and how did their individual styles complement each other in shaping the album’s sound?
John: The choice of Carles Salse was a natural one, as being our lead guitarist and arranger, he was involved in the whole pre-production process, Carles was clear about where we wanted to take our new sound. When we got the final mix, we thought of Seeb Levermann to give the album the necessary weight and solidity. Seeb is one of our current favorite producers and it has been really exciting to have his help in our new work.
The album’s concept draws inspiration from the arcade halls of the late 80s. How did this nostalgic setting influence the lyrical themes and overall atmosphere of the album?
Didac: This is a question I’d rather answer myself, since it’s my drawing, hahaha. When we focused on the album cover, a Star Wars movie poster came to mind, but also a Stranger Things one, so the cover is a mix of those two references. Except for young Eric, we are from the 80s/90s generation, and these references are very present today even for the millennial generation, we must not forget that the parents of this generation are precisely those who lived in that era. I was addicted to arcade machines! I preferred it to school classes, which upset my parents hehehe.
And yes, there are also elements from each song, which allowed me to use the cover to create the singles or the inside of the CD booklet. It turned out nice, don’t you think?
Collaborating with Daniel Heiman of Lost Horizon on „Take Me Back“ is a significant event. How did this collaboration come about, and what was it like working with such a renowned vocalist?
Didac: We wanted a big name collaboration and Daniel has that aura of a legendary power metal singer, we are very happy that he decided to collaborate with us! He is also very professional in the times we needed to meet etc. I think they complement each other very well, they could do a collaboration just the two of them and call the project “The Daniel’s” or something like that Hahahaha.
John: Daniel Heiman is one of our heroes from that 90s scene we were talking about. The song is about the memory of a deceased artist, about how every time you hear his voice on a record it’s like trying to bring him back to life.
I think the whole concept tied in really well with Heiman, as he hasn’t had much musical activity lately but we love listening to him whenever we can and we’d obviously love for Lost Horizon to come back sometime.
„Journey to the Sun“ explores themes of unity, the pursuit of truth, and overcoming limitations. Can you elaborate on the deeper meaning and message behind these themes?
John: Dani is the one who writes all the lyrics, based on his personal experiences or on the social information that surrounds him. He started writing the lyrics during the global pandemic, he had left Spain to look for a better opportunity in the US when everything broke out. Behind the songs there is a great social criticism of media manipulation. There is a call for the world to unite in the fight for the truth, as well as other great universal feelings.
How does „Journey to the Sun“ differ from your previous albums in terms of musical style, lyrical content, or overall artistic vision?
John: In all our albums we have tried to stay authentic in our style, but trying or exploring different directions. With our previous album we found a certain stability or security in the Melodic Prog Power style, and in this album we want to establish our bases in that style. I think we are facing a work with a clearer vision, more homogeneous than in previous occasions where we tried to confuse the listener. In this new work, we all shine especially in our instruments and Dani has much more prominence in his vocal virtues. He is a very talented singer and we seek to enhance that as he deserves. When Carles Salse joined the band (he is the new guy) we talked a lot about the bands and the musical style that we like. We realized that there was a very big point of connection with bands from the late 90’s and early 21st century. We wanted to reflect with sonic flashes that love and respect for the Heavy/Power of that time, giving it our own personality and with a totally fresh and current production. There is a certain nostalgia but we didn’t try to turn this into a retro party. Visually we worked on ideas from films like Stranger Things, Star Wars or Tron. We have been working on this whole artistic concept since 2021.
What are your expectations for the reception of „Journey to the Sun,“ and what are your goals for this album’s impact on your career?
John: I would like to be able to stop being the eternal underground band and be able to tour supporting the album in Europe, Asia, LATAM and the US. I hope that this album will give us real possibilities to grow as a band.
The album is described as an „adventure of epic proportions.“ Can you highlight a particularly challenging or rewarding aspect of the recording or songwriting process?
John: We started writing this album in 2021 and it has taken us almost 3 years of work, with many complications in various ways, so the title is perfect because this seemed like an impossible journey that was about to end the stability of the band. Finally we did it! There was a lot of creativity and we had a really good time arranging the songs. We always try to make each song have its own essence. It’s difficult to achieve, but I think we’ve done it. Songs that are different from each other but within a musical style. Each song is a journey, and each song has an epic moment. I think we’ve kept our promise.
What’s one thing you want listeners to take away from listening to „Journey to the Sun“?
Didac: I already mentioned at the beginning that I “touched myself” thinking about this album, so I hope the fans do too!
Do you have any other plans with the album?
John: We would like to do as many shows as possible. We also have plans to start writing another album.
And what about your plans for 2025? Tour?
John: We have had some offers for organized tours to go as a support band, we are going to seriously study all the proposals and we hope that this will finally happen.
Will your fans see you in Slovakia in 2025 as well?
John: We know the Slovak Heavy Metal scene quite well and the metalheads are great. It’s been too long since we last played in Slovakia, at MORE THAN FEST 2016, we’re looking forward to coming back soon, there are some great festivals going on right now and I hope they’ll call us to play.
We are coming to an end. Is there anything you want to tell your Slovakian fans?
John: Since 2009 we have produced 4 great albums in Slovakia, also in Journey to the Sun there is a little bit of Slovakia as we recorded some guitar and bass tracks in the former Grapow Studios in Zvolenska Slatina. Also our dear friend Mayo Petranin, current singer of Niakara and Castaway, collaborated on all the background vocals. We also had a lot of help from another Slovak musician, drummer Valerio Chroma who kindly let us use his beautiful drum kit for recording. There is a lot of love for Slovakia in Kilmara and we are really looking forward to seeing all our friends again.
