Festival South of Heaven Zbytiny IV ročník, který se odehraje v letošním roce 2025, opět přinese různé speciality pro návštěvníky, a obměnu kapel. South of Heaven festivalem velmi přátelským na naprosto suprovém místě, kdy pořadatelé VÁM každý rok přinášíme jinou porci skupin. Nejsme zaměřeni na stálé opakování jedněch a těch samých kapel z Čech i ze světa. Co nám k tomu řekli samy skupiny, si můžete přečíst v přidaných rozhovorech.
Alan – Ahoj. Jak jste se dozvěděli o našem festivale?
André Matos – Ahoj! Jeden náš přítel nám řekl o South of Heaven, slyšeli jsme o atmosféře a fantastickém prostředí, to nás nadchlo. Cítili jsme okamžité spojení s energií festivalu a lidmi co stojí za ním. Bylo tedy jasné že zde chceme hrát. Nemůžeme se dočkat, až budeme festivalovou součástí!
Alan – Festival South of Heaven se odehrává v lomu s naprosto fantastickou akustikou. Těšíte se?
André – Rozhodně! Lom jako místo konání je jedinečným prostředím pro festival. Akustika musí být neuvěřitelná a na hraní v tak syrovém, přirozeném prostředí je něco zvláštního. Jsme nadšeni, když vidíme, jak naše hudba interaguje s krajinou. Bude to nezapomenutelné!
Alan – Když už jsme v lomu, hráli jste na nějakém zajímavém místě? A jaký z toho jste měli dojmy?
André – Ano! Hráli jsme na docela neobvyklých místech – staré hrady, opuštěné továrny a dokonce i podzemní kluby. Myslím, že hraní v přírodě bylo vždy jedním z nejpamátnějších zážitků. Je v tom syrovost, jako by samotná země ožila zvukem hudby. Každé z těchto míst nabízí něco jedinečného a přivést naši hudbu k životu v neočekávaném prostředí je vždy nové dobrodružství.
Alan – Co zajímavého na festival přivezete, krom dobré nálady a vaší hudby? Nová deska, pyrotechnika …..?
André – Přinášíme nadupaný zážitek, z našeho posledního alba Hubris, který přichází s naším živelným vystoupením. Nechceme, abyste hudbu jen slyšeli – chceme, abyste ji cítili. Očekávejte nějaká překvapení s našimi vizuály a scénickým designem a řekněme… možná něco trochu ohnivého, co povznese zážitek. Je to všechno o vytvoření atmosféry, která působí jako společný rituál.
Alan – Na festival South of Heaven jedete jen na otočku, nebo je součástí letního tour?
André – South of Heaven je součástí našich letních plánů, není to pro nás jen „otočka“. Je to destinace! Dáváme si pauzu od pravidelného turné, abychom zahráli na tomto festivale, opravdu se těšíme na propojení s českým publikem. Není to jen koncert; je to zážitek i pro nás.
Alan – Sledujete náš festival delší dobu? Pokud ano, jak dlouho, a co vás na něm nejvíce zaujalo?
André – V průběhu let jsme o South of Heaven slyšeli mnohé, toto je naše první šance být toho součástí. Co nás opravdu zaujalo, bylo zaměření na každoroční přísun čerstvých, různorodých kapel a vytváření jedinečné festivalové atmosféry. Není to jen další metalový festival; jde o vytvoření zážitku, který lidé mohou cítit a zapamatovat si. To nás vzrušuje nejvíc.
Alan – Pojďme do vaší kotliny – domoviny. Jak se vám tam hraje? Jaké máte zázemí ohledně fans?
André – Žijeme v Portugalsku, odezva tamních fanoušků byla vždy neuvěřitelná. Naše hudba rezonuje s lidmi, kteří oceňují temnější, symfonickou stránku metalu, energie, kterou získáváme z našich koncertování v Portugalsku, je to intenzivní. Naši fanoušci jsou jedni z nejoddanějších a nejvášnivějších lidí – jsou to ztracené duše, které se spojují se syrovými emocemi v naší hudbě. Je pokořující a energizující.
Alan – Obecná otázka, jak vnímáte festivaly, jaká je možnost a podmínky za jakých se na ně lze dostat a zahrát s kapelou? Máte nějakou pikantní zkušenost s podmínkami či přístupem pořadatele festivalu?
André – Festivaly jsou pro kapely, jako je ta naše, životně důležité – poskytují šanci oslovit lidi, kteří nás možná ještě neznají, a zahrát si po boku dalších skvělých muzikantů je něco zvláštního. Možnosti jsou nekonečné, protože festivaly nám umožňují vymanit se z obvyklých turné. Co se týče pikantních zážitků, měli jsme svůj podíl na zvláštních situacích, jako jsou změny na poslední chvíli nebo nečekané technické výzvy, ale to vše je součástí dobrodružství. Nejdůležitější je hudba a spojení s publikem bez ohledu na podmínky.
Alan – A s tím související otázka : jezdíte na nějaké festivaly jako fanoušci? Na jaké a proč?
André – Rozhodně! Sami jsme fanoušci festivalů. Některé z našich oblíbených jsou ty s větší atmosférou, kde se celý zážitek – hudba, atmosféra, místo – spojuje způsobem, který působí téměř magicky. Byli jsme na festivalech jako Wacken, Mera Luna, Wave Gothic Treffen a samozřejmě na našich místních jako Laurus Nobilis, Milagre Metaleiro Open air, Vagos Metal fest nebo SWR Barroselas, kde intenzita a rozmanitost kapel vytváří nezapomenutelný zážitek. Nejedeme jen proto, abychom viděli kapely, ale abychom cítili ten smysl pro komunitu a sdílenou energii, kterou festivaly vytvářejí.
Alan – Závěrem bych se zeptal na vaše hudební vzory a co momentálně posloucháte?
André – Naše vlivy pocházejí z celého hudebního spektra – od klasických skladatelů jako Gustav Mahler až po syrovou intenzitu kapel jakými jsou Septic Flesh, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Samael, Satyricon a samozřejmě naši bratři Moonspell. Inspiraci čerpáme také z filmových partitur pro texturu a atmosféru. Právě teď posloucháme mix nového a starého – trochu klasického black metalu, trochu experimentálnější symfonické hudby a dokonce i nějaký post-rock, abychom vyvážili intenzitu a krásu.

The 4th edition of the South of Heaven Zbytiny festival, which will take place in 2025, will again bring various specialties for visitors and a change of bands. South of Heaven is a very friendly festival in an absolutely great place, where the organizers bring YOU a different portion of groups every year. We are not focused on constantly repeating the same bands from the Czech Republic and the world. You can read what the groups told us about it in the added interviews.
Alan – Hello. How did you find out about our festival?
André Matos – Hey! A friend of ours introduced us to South of Heaven, and after hearing about the vibe and the fantastic setting, we were hooked. We felt an instant connection with the festival’s energy and the people behind it. So, it was a no-brainer for us to accept this year’s invite. We can’t wait to be part of it!
Alan – The South of Heaven festival is in a quarry with absolutely fantastic acoustics. Are you looking forward to it?
André – Absolutely! A quarry as a venue is such a unique setting for a festival. The acoustics must be incredible, and there’s something special about playing in such a raw, natural environment. We thrive on intensity, and we’re excited to see how our music interacts with the landscape. It’s going to be unforgettable!
Alan – Speaking of the quarry, did you play in any interesting places? And what were your impressions of it?
André – Yes! We’ve played some pretty unusual places — old castles, abandoned factories, and even underground clubs. But I think playing in nature has always been one of the most memorable experiences. There’s a rawness to it, like the earth itself is alive with the sound of the music. Each of these places offers something unique, and it’s always a new adventure to bring our music to life in unexpected settings.
Alan – What interesting things will you bring to the festival, besides good mood and your music? New album, pyrotechnics… ?
André – We’re bringing the full experience, from our latest tracks off Hubris to all the emotion that comes with our live set. We don’t just want you to hear the music — we want you to feel it. Expect some surprises with our visuals and stage design, and let’s just say… maybe something a little fiery to elevate the experience. It’s all about creating an atmosphere that feels like a shared ritual.
Alan – Are you going to the South of Heaven festival just for a spin, or is it part of a summer tour?
André – South of Heaven is part of our summer plans, but it’s not just a “spin” for us. It’s a destination! We’re taking a break from the regular tour route to play this festival, and we’ve been really looking forward to connecting with the Czech audience. It’s not just a gig; it’s an experience for us, too.
Alan – Have you been following our festival for a long time? If so, how long, and what interested you the most about it?
André – We’ve heard about South of Heaven over the years, but this is our first chance to be part of it. What really caught our attention was the focus on bringing fresh, diverse bands and creating a unique festival atmosphere every year. It’s not just another metal festival; it’s about creating an experience that people can feel and remember. That’s what excites us the most.
Alan – Let’s go to your homeland. How do you play there? What is your background in terms of fans?
André – We’re based in Portugal, and the response from fans there has always been incredible. Our music resonates with people who appreciate the darker, symphonic side of metal, and the energy we get from our local shows is intense. Our fans are some of the most dedicated and passionate people — they are the lost souls who connect with the raw emotion in our music. It’s humbling and energizing to see them every time.
Alan – A general question, how do you perceive festivals, what are the possibilities and conditions under which you can get to them and play with a band? Do you have any spicy experience with the conditions or approach of the festival organizer?
André – Festivals are vital for bands like ours — they provide the chance to reach people who might not know us yet, and there’s something special about playing alongside other great acts. The possibilities are endless, as festivals allow us to break out of the usual tour circuits. As for spicy experiences, we’ve had our share of odd situations, like last-minute changes or unexpected technical challenges, but that’s all part of the adventure. What matters most is the music and the connection with the audience, regardless of the conditions.
Alan – And a related question: do you go to any festivals as fans? Which ones and why?
André – Definitely! We’re fans of festivals ourselves. Some of our favorites are the more atmospheric ones where the entire experience — the music, the vibe, the location — comes together in a way that feels almost magical. We’ve been to festivals like Wacken, Mera Luna, Wave Gothic Treffen, and of course our local ones like Laurus Nobilis, Milagre Metaleiro Open air, Vagos Metal fest or SWR Barroselas, where the intensity and the diversity of bands create an unforgettable experience. We go not just to see the bands, but to feel that sense of community and shared energy that festivals create.
Alan – Finally, I would like to ask about your musical influences and what are you currently listening to?
André – Our influences come from all over the musical spectrum — from classical composers like Gustav Mahler to the raw intensity of bands like Septic Flesh, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Samael, Satyricon and of course our brothers Moonspell. We also draw inspiration from film scores for texture and atmosphere. Right now, we’re listening to a mix of the new and the old — some classic black metal, some more experimental symphonic music, and even some post-rock to balance the intensity with beauty.
