So svojím novým albumom Forever dokazujú, že hrdinstvo — aj humor — nikdy nezomierajú. Diskutovali sme s neohrozeným Sirom Optimusom Primeom, aby sme sa porozprávali o večnej sláve, metalovom bratstve a tragických dôsledkoch zabudnutých gitár na letisku. Nový album sa volá Forever. V univerze Grailknights, čo vlastne znamená „navždy“ — večnú slávu, večné členstvo v posilňovni, alebo nekonečný boj s Dr. Skullom? Čo to znamená pre teba?
V podstate to znamená, že to robíme už naozaj dlho — viac ako 20 rokov — a stále máme chuť pokračovať. Niektorí sa nás pýtajú: „Vy to stále robíte? Ešte stále nosíte tie bláznivé kostýmy?“ A my len povieme: „Áno, robíme to, stále to robíme a budeme to robiť dovtedy, kým nás to baví.“ A ono nás to stále baví — aj po dvadsiatich rokoch. Je to stále obrovská zábava.
Takže myšlienka je: poďme tento moment udržať navždy. To je duch, ktorý za tým stojí. Samozrejme, má to aj ten superhrdinský rozmer — slovo „forever“ má tú „Batman Forever“ asociáciu, takže to zapadlo celkom dobre. A navyše, Bon Jovi vydal album s názvom Forever, takže to musí byť dobré!
Na vážnejšiu nôtu — aké je emocionálne alebo koncepčné jadro tohto albumu? Čo chcete ľuďom povedať, textovo alebo hudobne?
Nie je to čisto konceptuálny album — neexistuje tam príbeh, ktorý by sa tiahol od začiatku až do konca. Hlavným cieľom bolo vytvoriť album, ktorý je jednoducho radosť počúvať. To je to najdôležitejšie. Niektoré piesne majú hlbší význam, a samozrejme, sú ovplyvnené tým, čo sa deje okolo nás, ale v zásade sme chceli energický, melodický a zábavný album.
Sme kapela, ktorá žije pre koncerty — oslavujeme živé momenty. Keď si na pódiu, hneď vieš, ktoré skladby majú tú správnu energiu. Sú piesne, pri ktorých publikum reaguje, aj keď ťa ešte nepozná — a vtedy vieš, že to funguje. Snažili sme sa vytvoriť skladby, ktoré sú povzbudzujúce a plné energie. To bol základný cieľ — mať zábavný, melodický, energický album. O tom to proste je. A perfektne to sedí k nášmu imidžu.
Albumy Grailknights často pôsobia ako kapitoly z hrdinskej ságy. Keby bol Forever filmovým pokračovaním, bol by to triumfálny návrat, temná stredná kapitola, alebo muzikálna komédia, ktorú nikto nečakal?
Povedal by som, že triumfálny návrat. V skutočnosti začíname novú kapitolu v našej histórii — máme nové vydavateľstvo po viac ako desiatich rokoch s tým starým a máme pocit, akoby to bol akýsi nový začiatok. Je to nový prístup k skladaniu piesní. Naše skladby sú teraz kratšie, a áno, môžeš nás za to kritizovať — ľudia hovoria: „Aha, chcú byť rádiová kapela!“ Ale to je jednoducho moment, v ktorom sa nachádzame. Ďalší album možno zase prinesie päťminútové piesne! Takže áno, je to triumfálny návrat a reštart.
A samozrejme, neustále rozširujeme našu mytológiu. Aj keď album nemá jednotný príbeh od začiatku po koniec, v jednotlivých piesňach je množstvo malých príbehov.
Vždy ste vyvažovali humor a úprimnosť. Bol na albume Forever moment, keď si si povedal: „Počkaj, toto je vlastne naozaj hlboké“?
Áno, bolo — pri balade In the Eyes of the Enemy. Natočili sme k nej videoklip, ktorý je úplne bláznivý a zábavný, typicky „náš“. Ale keď som tú pieseň písal, bola ovplyvnená tým, čo sa deje vo svete počas posledných troch rokov. Náš predchádzajúci album Musclebound for Glory sme vydali presne v deň, keď začala vojna na Ukrajine — v ten piatok. Bol som nadšený z vydania albumu, a potom prišli správy o raketách dopadajúcich na Kyjev a o ruskom útoku. Všetci sme boli zničení.
Takže túto skladbu ovplyvnili tie obrazy, ktoré mi zostali v hlave. V klipe to nie je vidieť, ale ten hlbší význam tam je.
Celý váš koncept — kostýmy, mytológia, mená — pôsobí to ako Marvelovský crossover režírovaný Manowarom. Ako udržiavate hrdinstvo svieže aj po 20 rokoch zachraňovania Grailhamu?
Niekedy to nie je jednoduché. Musíš stále prichádzať s novými nápadmi na pódiu, a to je ťažké, keď si malá kapela bez veľkého rozpočtu na obrovskú show. Spoliehame sa na vlastnú energiu a kreativitu. Neustále prehodnocujeme naše show prvky, hľadáme drobnosti, ktoré publikum rozosmejú a pobavia. To je náš recept — rozmýšľame, čo môžeme spraviť ďalej, čo funguje, ako to udržať zábavné.
Kapela vlastne vznikla ako opitý halloweenový nápad. Nesadli sme si s cieľom založiť „superhrdinskú kapelu“ — boli sme opití a povedali sme si: „Poďme na pódium ako superhrdinovia!“ A fungovalo to. Keď to funguje, netreba to meniť!
Pomáha ti brnenie a postava na pódiu prejaviť časti tvojej osobnosti, ktoré by si v bežnej kapele neukázal?
Rozhodne. Nepovedal by som, že sme úplne iní ľudia na pódiu, ale áno — bežne sme skôr tichšie typy. Ale keď si oblečieme brnenie, zrazu to začne — cítime tú energiu. Máme inú reč tela, iné gestá — a môžeme robiť, čo len chceme. To je na tom najväčšia zábava. Môžeš spraviť čokoľvek, a publikum to miluje. Bez brnenia by asi reagovali inak! Brnenie nám dodáva tú správnu energiu.
Imidž vašej kapely stojí na silných, svalnatých superhrdinoch. Tak úprimne — kto z kapely by najskôr vynechal „leg day“ v Grail Gyme?
Myslím, že nikto z nás by ho nemal vynechávať — aj keď niektorí by ho možno potrebovali viac než iní! Náš bubeník, Lord Drumcules, robí dosť práce nohami, takže možno on by mohol. Ale je jediný, kto na to má oprávnenie!
Koncerty Grailknights sú legendárne pre zapojenie publika — Battlechoir, boje s Dr. Skullom, misiou za slávou… Ako dôležité sú pre teba tieto divadelné prvky?
Sú nesmierne dôležité. Keď nás ľudia vidia prvýkrát, často si pomyslia: „OK, hudba je super, ale vyzerajú smiešne.“ A potom spravíme malý show prvok — a zrazu sa začnú usmievať. Energia publika sa úplne zmení. To je presne to, čo chceme: tú zmes zábavy a dobrej hudby.
Stále rozmýšľame, kedy pridať show prvok a kedy len hrať piesne, lebo energia musí zostať na vysokej úrovni. Ak prestaneš hrať, môže upadnúť, ale ak je ten prvok dobrý, publikum sa ešte viac nadchne. Je to veľká zábava pre všetkých — či už je to „muscle wave“, „Grailrobic“, súboj alebo predstavenie nového laserového meča. Vždy si zo všetkého robíme srandu, ale hudba je stále vážna vec.
Čoskoro sa chystáte na Battle of Metal turné s All For Metal — to znie ako najhrdinskejší crossover v histórii power metalu. Ako sa toto spojenectvo zrodilo?
Poznáme Tetzela, speváka kapiel Asenblut a All For Metal, už celé veky — možno pätnásť rokov. Teraz máme rovnaké vydavateľstvo a oni prišli s nápadom: „Vy sa k sebe hodíte — poznáte sa, hrali ste spolu.“ Dokonca sme kedysi hrali s jeho death metalovou kapelou Asenblut.
Takže sme všetci hneď povedali: „Jasné, ideme do toho!“ Bude to obrovská zábava.
Na stupnici od Green Lanterna po Conana — aké epické budú tieto koncerty?
Oboje! Budú mať Conan faktor aj Green Lantern faktor. Bude to veľmi, veľmi epické. Obe kapely sú totálne show-bands, takže udržíme energiu tri hodiny v kuse. A máme aj skvelého hosťa — Tungsten zo Švédska. Bude to super, zábavné a dúfam, že každý odíde s úsmevom — a s väčšími bicepsmi, samozrejme!
Je šanca, že uvidíme Battle Royale medzi Grailknights a All For Metal?
Neplánujeme bojovať proti sebe — možno budeme bojovať spolu proti Dr. Skullovi alebo proti niekomu inému, kto si to zaslúži! Určite tam bude aj pár zábavných crossover momentov. Ale nechajme to ako prekvapenie — uvidíme, čo sa dá realizovať.
Turné môže byť drsné aj pre superhrdinov. Kto je váš skutočný nepriateľ na cestách?
Najhoršie, čo sa nám stalo, bolo, keď sa na letisku niekto spýtal: „Priniesli ste gitary?“ A my: „Nie.“ To bolo fakt zlé — ale nejako sme to zvládli.
Najväčším nepriateľom na turné je pravdepodobne samotná rutina. Nie sme veľká kapela, takže si robíme všetko sami — prenášame aparát, staviame, balíme — a to je únavné. A potom skúste sa vyspať v autobuse so sedemnástimi chlapmi, z ktorých niektorí chrápu ako draci! Takže áno, hlasné spanie — to je náš pravý Nemesis.
Vaše skoršie albumy mali melodic deathmetalový nádych, tie novšie sú skôr čistý melodický power metal s obrovskými refrénmi. Bola to prirodzená evolúcia alebo vedomá snaha o melodické hrdinstvo?
Bol to nápad spojiť kostýmy a hudbu — aby sa obraz kapely a zvuk ešte viac prepojili. Ale úprimne, myslím si, že aj deathmetalové prvky by stále fungovali. Keďže sa neberieme príliš vážne, mohlo by to do budúcna fungovať tiež.
V posledných rokoch sme sa sústredili na power metal — dobré refrény, silné melódie, povzbudzujúcu hudbu. Ale už pracujeme na novom materiáli a možno tam znova budú aj melodické death prvky. Neustále sa vyvíjame. Možno ďalší album bude znieť úplne inak. Nejde o hľadanie jednej fixnej cesty — ide o to robiť hudbu, ktorú v danej chvíli chceme robiť, a baviť sa pri tom.
Keby Dr. Skull zrazu vydal dojímavú baladu o vašom priateľstve, zničil by si ho aj tak alebo by si ho pozval do kapely?
No… toto, čo ti poviem, je tajomstvo, takže si to nechaj pre seba, ale občas si spolu dáme po koncerte pivo. Ale nemali by sme o tom príliš hovoriť — to by hraničilo so zradou! Takže, pssst, zostane to medzi nami.
Za tie roky ste od fanúšikov určite dostali množstvo šialených vecí. Aký bol ten najlepší alebo najčudnejší darček či odkaz?
Najkrajší dar sme dostali v Japonsku — ručne vyrezávaný papierový obraz všetkých členov kapely. Je neuveriteľne detailný a nádherný. Boli sme ohromení.
Fanúšikovia nám tiež vyrábali koláče, sušienky a malé figúrky s plášťami. Dokonca aj fľaše so schnapsom, ktoré mali vlastné plášte! A ponožky — v našich farbách, ručne pletené. Nie len raz, ale viackrát! Takže áno, ponožky patria medzi tie čudnejšie dary. Sušienky dokonca mali vlastné recepty a farby pre každého z nás. Moje boli zelené — možno trocha nebezpečné, ale kto vie!
Vaša hudba vždy kombinovala zábavu, úprimnosť a záchranu sveta jedným power akordom za druhým. Aké je ďalšie veľké dobrodružstvo Grailknights po Forever a turné Battle of Metal?
Ďalšia výprava je opäť turné — na jar 2026 v Nemecku. Pre nás to bude veľká vec. Tiež dúfame, že sa vrátime do Japonska, možno aj do Číny — na tom pracujeme. A, samozrejme, tešíme sa aj na nejaké festivaly.

“Forever, Glory, and Leg Day Eternal” — An Interview with Sir Optimus Prime of Grailknights
In a world threatened by evil forces, questionable gym attendance, and a chronic shortage of capes, there rises one shining beacon of hope: the mighty GRAILKNIGHTS! Armed with riffs, valor, and a healthy dose of absurdity, these Lycra-clad heroes have spent over two decades saving the world one power chord at a time. With their new album Forever, they prove that heroism — and humor — truly never die. We sat down with the ever-valiant Sir Optimus Prime to talk about eternal glory, metal camaraderie, and the tragic consequences of forgetting your guitars at the airport. The new album is called Forever. In the Grailknights universe, what does “forever” really mean — eternal glory, eternal gym membership, or an endless battle with Dr. Skull? What does it mean to you?
Basically, it means we’ve been doing this for quite a long time now — more than 20 years — and we’re still in the spirit to keep going. Some people ask us, “Are you still doing this? Are you still wearing those goofy costumes?” And we just say, “Yeah, we do it, and we still do it, and we’ll keep doing it as long as it’s fun.” And it still is, even after 20 years. It’s still big fun.
So the idea is: let’s keep this moment forever. That’s the spirit behind it. Of course, there’s also a superhero aspect to it — the word “forever” has that “Batman Forever” association, so it fit quite well. And besides, Bon Jovi also released an album called Forever, so it must be good!
On a more serious note, what’s the emotional or conceptual core of this album? What do you want to tell people, either lyrically or musically?
It isn’t a pure concept album — there’s no story running from beginning to end. The main goal was to make an album that’s fun to listen to. That’s the most important thing. Some songs have a deeper meaning, and of course there are influences from what’s happening around us, but basically we wanted a highly energetic, melodic, and fun album.
We’re a live band — we celebrate the live moments. When you’re on stage, you realize which songs have the right energy. There are songs where the crowd reacts even if they don’t know you, and that’s when you know it works. We tried to create songs that are uplifting and full of energy. That was the basic goal — to have a fun, melodic, energetic album. It’s simple as that, and it fits our image perfectly.
Grailknights records often feel like chapters in a heroic saga. If Forever were the movie sequel, which would it be — the triumphant comeback, the dark middle chapter, or the musical comedy no one expected?
I’d say the triumphant comeback. We’re actually starting a new chapter in our history — we have a new label after more than ten years with the old one, and it feels like a new beginning. It’s a new approach to songwriting. Our songs are shorter now, and you can criticize that — people say, “Oh, they’re going for the radio!” But that’s just where we are right now. The next album might have five-minute songs again! So yes, it’s the triumphant comeback and return.
Of course, we’re always expanding our lore. Even though there’s no single story running through the album, there are lots of little stories in the songs.
You’ve always balanced humor and heart. Was there a moment on Forever where you stopped and thought, “Hold on — this is actually really deep”?
Actually, yes — with the ballad In the Eyes of the Enemy. We made a video for it, and the video is totally fun and nonsense, very much in our lore. But when I wrote the song, it was influenced by everything that’s been happening politically in the last three years. We released our last album Musclebound for Glory on the exact day the war in Ukraine started — that Friday. I was so excited about the release, and then the news came about rockets hitting Kyiv and the Russian attack. Everyone was devastated.
So this song was influenced by those images that stayed in my mind. You can’t see that deeper meaning in the video, but it’s there.
Your whole idea — the costumes, the lore, the names — feels like a Marvel crossover directed by Manowar. How do you keep the heroics fresh even after 20 years of saving Grailham City?
Sometimes it’s not that easy. You have to keep coming up with new ideas for the stage, and that’s hard when you’re a small band without a big budget for massive stage shows. We rely on our own energy and creativity to make it work. We’re always rethinking our show elements, trying to find small new things that make the audience smile and have fun. That’s the recipe — we think about what we can do next, what works, and how to keep it entertaining.
The band actually started as a drunk Halloween idea. We didn’t sit down and plan to form a superhero band — we were drunk and said, “Let’s go on stage dressed like superheroes!” And it worked. If it works, it works!
Do you feel that the armor and characters help you express sides of yourself that normal bands can’t?
Totally. I wouldn’t say we’re completely different characters on stage, but yes, we’re usually rather quiet people. On stage, we put on the armor and suddenly feel the energy. We have different body language, different gestures — and we can do whatever we want. That’s the big fun of it. You can do anything, and the audience loves it. Without the armor, I’m not sure what they’d say! It gives us the right energy.
Your band’s image is built on strong, muscular superheroes. So, honestly — who in the band would be most likely to skip leg day at the Grail Gym?
I think none of us should skip leg day — though some might need it more than others! Our drummer, Lord Drumcules, does a lot of leg work, so maybe he could skip it. But he’s the only one who’s allowed to!
Grailknights shows are legendary for audience participation — the Battlechoir, the fights with Dr. Skull, and the Quest for Glory. How important is that theatrical side for you personally?
It’s super important. When people see us for the first time, they might think, “Okay, cool music, but they look ridiculous.” Then we do a little show element, and suddenly they start smiling — the energy in the crowd changes completely. That’s what we want: that mix of fun and good music.
We always think about when to add a show element and when to just play songs, because you need to keep the energy level high. If you stop playing, the energy can drop, but if the show element is good, the crowd gets even more into it. It’s big fun for everyone — whether it’s a “muscle wave,” a “Grailrobic,” a fight, or a new laser sword promotion. We always make fun of everything, but the music itself is still serious.
You’re about to go on the Battle of Metal tour with All For Metal — a truly heroic crossover. How did this alliance form?
We’ve known Tetzel, the singer of Asenblut and All For Metal, for ages — maybe 15 years. Now we share the same label, and they suggested the idea. They said, “You guys fit together — you know each other, you’ve played together before.” We’d even played with his death metal band Asenblut years ago.
So we all agreed immediately — of course we want to do this! It’s going to be big fun.
On a scale from Green Lantern to Conan, how epic will these shows be?
Both! They’ll have the Conan factor and the Green Lantern factor. It’s going to be very, very epic. We’re both total show bands and will keep the energy high for three hours. There’s also a fantastic special guest — Tungsten from Sweden. It’s going to be cool and entertaining. I hope everyone leaves with a big smile — and big muscles, of course!
Any chance we’ll witness a Battle Royale between Grailknights and All For Metal?
We don’t plan to fight each other — maybe we’ll fight together against Dr. Skull or whoever we’re angry with! There might be some fun crossover elements. Let’s keep it a surprise, though — we’ll see what’s possible.
Touring can be rough even for superheroes. What’s the real-world nemesis on the road?
The worst thing that ever happened was at an airport when someone suddenly asked, “Did you bring the guitars?” And we hadn’t. That was bad — but it worked out somehow.
The biggest nemesis on tour is probably the routine itself. We’re not a big band, so we have to do a lot ourselves — getting our own gear on and off stage, handling logistics — and that can be exhausting. Plus, try getting good sleep in a bus with 17 guys, some of whom snore loudly! So yeah, loud sleeping — that’s a true nemesis.
Your early albums had a melodic death metal edge, while the newer ones lean more toward pure melodic power metal with huge choruses. Was that a natural evolution or a conscious quest for melodic heroism?
It was the idea of fusing the costume and the music — to bring the image and the sound closer together. But honestly, I think death metal elements also fit the costumes. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, so it might work again in the future.
For the last years, power metal was our focus — writing good hooks, good melodies, uplifting songs. But we’ve already started working on new material, and there might be some melodic death metal elements again. We’re always evolving. Maybe the next album will sound completely different. It’s not about finding one fixed style — it’s about making the music we want to write in the moment and having fun with it.
If Dr. Skull suddenly released a heartfelt ballad about your friendship, would you still smite him or invite him to join the band?
Well… let’s keep this a secret. Sometimes, we drink a beer together. But we should probably not talk about that too much — it’s borderline treason! Let’s keep it between us.
You’ve surely received some weird stuff from fans over the years. What was the greatest or strangest fan gift or message?
The most beautiful fan gift was in Japan — a handmade paper-cut picture of all of us. It’s incredibly detailed and beautiful. We were amazed.
Fans have made cookies, cakes, and little figurines with capes. We even got schnapps bottles with capes! And socks — in our colors, hand-knitted. Not just once, but a few times. So yeah, socks are definitely among the weirder gifts. The cookies even had their own recipes and colors matching each of us. Mine were green — maybe dangerous, who knows!
Your music has always mixed fun, sincerity, and saving the world one power chord at a time. What’s the next great quest for Grailknights after Forever and the Battle of Metal tour?
The next quest is another tour — next spring, 2026, in Germany. It’ll be pretty big for us. We also hope to go back to Japan, maybe China — that’s something we’re working on. And, of course, we hope for some nice festivals too.
