Medzi anime inšpiráciami, spoluprácou s Diablo IV a nabitým harmonogramom koncertov po boku Helloween sa Beast in Black nikdy nezastavujú. Zakladateľ Anton Kabanen a basgitarista Maté Molnár sa s nami v Zvolene porozprávali o vyvažovaní ich žiarivej „arkádovej“ energie so skutočnými výzvami života, o dočasnom fungovaní kapely vo štvorici a o tom, čo môžu fanúšikovia očakávať od najbližšieho albumu.
Na turné ste s Helloween. Aká je to zatiaľ skúsenosť deliť sa o pódium s takou legendárnou kapelou?
Anton: Je pre nás česť byť tu, to je jasné, a veľmi si užívame koncerty. Na ceste sú vždy nejaké výzvy, najmä na začiatku turné, ale to je to, čo robíme. Berieme to profesionálne a robíme maximum.
Maté: Helloween je už dlho jednou z mojich obľúbených kapiel a, ako povedal Anton, je to česť byť tu s nimi. Správajú sa k nám veľmi milo a to nie je samozrejmosť. Absolvovali sme už viacero support turné aj vlastné headliny, takže sa naučíš veľa o tom, ako sa máš správať k predkapelám. Zatiaľ máme skvelú skúsenosť — je to len päť či šesť koncertov, mnoho nás ešte čaká, ale tešíme sa na všetky.
Po tých prvých koncertoch — mali ste už čas pozrieť si celý set Helloween? A máte obľúbenú pesničku z ich vystúpenia?
Maté: Pred dvoma koncertmi sme si s Yannisom pozreli takmer celý ich set. Už počas zvukovky bolo vidieť, že je to obrovská produkcia — viac ako dvojhodinová — a bolo skvelé vidieť to celé. Hrajú skladby, ktoré naživo hrajú len zriedka, čo je pre fanúšika, ako som ja, vzrušujúce. Napríklad We Burn bol prekvapením. Mám veľmi rád Power a aj A Little Too Much z nového albumu — to je tiež výborná skladba. Je ťažké vybrať jednu, v ich sete je veľa dobrých piesní.
Každá kapela má svoje predkoncertné rituály. Aké sú tie vaše?
Anton: Zvyčajne sa rozcvičujem hraním na gitaru — to je moja rutina. A dám si pohár saké, japonského ryžového vína. To je asi všetko, čo robím pred vystúpením.
Maté: Nemám nič veľmi špecifické osobne, ale ako kapela máme pred koncertmi malé „niečo“. Pred pár koncertmi sa to dokonca trochu zmenilo, pretože počas tohto turné sme mali zmenu zostavy. To ovplyvnilo pár vecí, vrátane nášho predkoncertného momentu. Ale to si nechávame pre seba — je to naša malá vnútorná vec.
Už ste spomenuli zmenu zostavy, ktorú ste oznámili, ale veľmi ste ju nevysvetlili. Môžete prezradiť aspoň niečo viac o tom, čo sa stalo?
Anton: Dohodli sme sa, že sa k tomu zatiaľ nebudeme viac vyjadrovať. Samozrejme za tým sú dôvody, ale veci sa dejú tak, ako majú. Robíme maximum v náročných okolnostiach a som optimista, že nakoniec to dopadne lepšie. Pracujeme aj na štvrtom albume, takže prirodzene to ovplyvňuje aj to, ale stále držíme termíny s vydavateľstvom. Veci idú tak, ako majú.
Maté: Áno, existuje dôvod, prečo o dôvodoch nehovoríme. Je nešťastné, že sa to stalo po desiatich rokoch — takmer presne desať rokov od vzniku kapely — ale toto je nová kapitola v živote Beast in Black. Možno k lepšiemu. Uvidíme.
Ako ste sa prispôsobili tomu, že hráte ako štvorica? To musí prinášať určité zmeny v koncertovaní.
Anton: Je to vlastne trochu nostalgické, pretože úplne prvý koncert Beast in Black v novembri 2015 bol vo štvorici. Boli sme to ja, Maté, Sami Hänninen na bicích a Yannis za mikrofónom. Takže je to vlastne akýsi návrat ku koreňom. Keďže som napísal piesne, hrať ich nie je problém — jedinou výzvou sú gitarové sóla, ktoré teraz improvizujem každý večer. Jeden večer znejú tak, iný úplne inak — niekedy dokonca skĺznem trochu do jazzu! Ale baví ma to. Chémia na pódiu tam stále je a to je najdôležitejšie. Po prvom koncerte vo štvorici prišli fanúšikovia k merchu a hovorili, ako veľmi si to užili — ani nespomenuli zmenu zostavy. Bolo to veľmi úprimné a dodalo nám to motiváciu pokračovať.
Ste uprostred turné. Máte už plán ako nájsť náhradu, alebo čakáte, kým sa turné skončí?
Anton: Keď bude niečo, čo môžeme oznámiť, oznámime to. Zatiaľ chceme okolo toho udržať trochu tajomstva. Všetko zverejníme, keď príde správny čas. Nechceme živiť zbytočné špekulácie — sústreďujeme sa na to dôležité a ideme ďalej.
Na Slovensku ste už hrali viackrát. Ako vnímate slovenské publikum v porovnaní s inými miestami?
Anton: Pre mňa je publikum Beast in Black vždy rovnaké publikum Beast in Black, nech sme kdekoľvek. Tak to vidím. Veľmi si užívam spoznávanie miestnej kultúry, keď je čas — veci, ktoré sú v porovnaní s tým u nás doma iné, miestne jedlo a nápoje, tieto skúsenosti robia turné zapamätateľnejším. Ale keď ideme na pódium, aj keď je to publikum Helloween, na tú jednu hodinu to pôsobí, akoby to bol úplne náš koncert.
Maté: Áno, hrali sme tu s Rhapsody počas jedného z našich prvých turné mimo Fínska a Nemecka, v roku 2018. Mám na ten koncert skvelé spomienky. Odvtedy sme sa vrátili do Bratislavy dva alebo tri razy a je to vždy super publikum. Aj keď je to tentokrát koncert Helloween, sme špeciálni hostia, takže je tu aj veľa našich fanúšikov. Myslím, že to bude skvelý večer.
Fanúšik sa pýta: urobili by ste niekedy „gear rundown“ ako Guitar Pro, kde by ste ukázali, na čom hráte a aké používate vybavenie?
Anton: Myslím, že sme to ešte nerobili, ale náš setup je dosť jednoduchý. Používame Neural DSP Quad Cortex na modelovanie zosilňovačov a hrám na gitary ESP — kedysi som hrával na Jacksonoch a možno sa jedného dňa vrátim. Nemám žiadnu exkluzívnu zmluvu, pretože mám rád slobodu používať to, čo mi v danej chvíli vyhovuje. Takže u mňa je to v zásade Quad Cortex a ESP. Naša crew rieši väčšinu ostatného vybavenia a playback vecí. Playback ide z Pro Tools, čo je bežné.
Maté: Áno, na basu používam custom nástroje od slovenskej firmy GV Guitars. Vyrábajú ich neďaleko odtiaľto, v Gúte. Takže moje basy sú dnes naozaj lokálne!
Váš najnovší singel Enter the Behelit spája zvuk Beast in Black s temnejšou, fantasy atmosférou. Ako vznikla spolupráca s Diablo IV a čo si myslíte o prepájaní hudby a hier?
Anton: Bolo to veľké prekvapenie, keď nás oslovili a je česť byť súčasťou tohto projektu. Pre mňa osobne to bol splnený sen, pretože som fanúšikom Berserk od roku asi 2005. Bola to prvá oficiálna spolupráca, ktorá spojila Berserk a Blizzard, takže to bolo veľmi emotívne. Nemali sme veľa času na prípravu, ale sme hrdí, ako klip dopadol — krásne spája animáciu a hrané zábery kapely. Režisérka Katri Ilona Koppanen odviedla neuveriteľnú prácu. Napríklad obrovská maketa ruky vo videu bola postavená jednou osobou vo veľmi krátkom čase. Všetko sa dalo dokopy rýchlo, ale pôsobivo.
Maté: Hlavná kancelária Blizzardu je v Los Angeles, ale majú aj pobočku v Londýne a niekoľko ľudí z ich londýnskeho tímu prišlo na náš koncert práve kvôli tejto spolupráci. Bol to veľmi milý krok — ukázali, že si projekt cenia rovnako ako my.
Je tam zaujímavý kontrast medzi energiou Beast in Black — skoro až arkádovým metalom — a temnou gotickou atmosférou Diabla. Ako ste tieto svety vyvážili?
Anton: Ako skladateľ som toho nemusel veľa upravovať. Hľadali hudbu súvisiacu s Berserk a ja som už mal Enter the Behelit rozpracovaný pre štvrtý album. Poslal som im texty a surovú demo verziu a páčilo sa im to hneď. Väčšia výzva bola videoprodukcia, pretože sme chceli jasné Berserk prvky — napríklad samotný Behelit. Plachta, ktorú teraz používame na pódiu, má dizajn inšpirovaný Berserkom, zobrazuje Gutsa v brnení. Pre mňa ako fanúšika je to veľmi špeciálne.
Vaša hudba často čerpá z popkultúry — manga, anime, „arkádový“ zvuk… Aký máte vzťah k popkultúre? Máte aj nejaké guilty pleasures?
(Anton trochu nepochopil otázku a odpovedal skôr o kreatívnom procese.)
Anton: Je vždy ťažké vysvetliť kreatívny proces — prečo niektoré veci s tebou rezonujú a inšpirujú ťa. Čokoľvek, čo trafí tú správnu emocionálnu strunu, sa môže stať súčasťou piesne. Mal som tento tvorivý impulz už ako dieťa, písal som piesne jednoducho preto, že som musel. Nie je to voľba; je to niečo, čo musíš robiť. Musí to prameniť z vášne, lásky a oddanosti. To ma ženie dopredu.
Keby ste mali každého člena kapely prirovnať k nejakému fiktívnej popkultúrnej postave, kto by to bol?
Anton: To je nové! Vždy som miloval Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, takže by som povedal, že sme ako oni — momentálne sme štyria. Ja by som bol Leonardo, môj detský favorit. Myslím, že keďže sme teraz kapela vo štvorici, Ninja Turtles fungujú perfektne.
Maté: Je vtipné, že to hovoríš, pretože na začiatku našej kariéry sme počas Crazy, Mad, Insane! vystupovali s maskami Ninja korytnačiek! Obliekali sme sa aj ako Luigi a Mario, a dokonca ako opice. Takže áno, prirovnanie ku korytnačkám sedí.
Anton: Pravda! A Yannis občas volá Atteho „Bowser“ z Maria, takže to celé pekne zapadá.
Nový album je plánovaný na rok 2026. Kde sa v procese nachádzate a čo môžeme očakávať?
Anton: Nebude to jar — vyjde na jeseň, zhruba počas nášho headline turné. Yannis už naspieval vokály, ešte musíme dokončiť niektoré klávesy a gitarové sóla, ale základ je hotový. Dokonca som si zobral na turné prenosné štúdio, aby som na ňom mohol ďalej pracovať. Je vo veľmi dobrom stave a pokračujeme aj počas cestovania.
Maté: Bude tam desať úplne nových piesní — nezaradíme tam dve samostatné single z tohto a minulého roka. Takže fanúšikovia dostanú desať úplne nových trackov.
Anton: Najskôr vyjdú single a práve sme mali stretnutie s naším labelom v Londýne, kde sme riešili plán vydania. Nemôžeme zatiaľ oznámiť presné dátumy, ale určite to bude v roku 2026.
Plánujete turné so Sonata Arctica ako špeciálnymi hosťami. Aký je to pocit mať takú legendárnu fínsku kapelu ako support?
Anton: Je to trochu surreálne! S mojou predošlou kapelou Battle Beast som s nimi ťahali turné v roku 2012 a boli to veľmi milí chalani. Ako tínedžer som počúval ich piesne v rádiu a bol som ohromený melódiami a gitarovou prácou. Takže je neuveriteľné byť teraz v pozícii, kde idú ako špeciálni hostia s nami. Je to česť a sme radi, že sa to podarilo — máme aj rovnaký management, čo pomohlo.
Maté: Vždy som bol fanúšikom Sonata Arctica. Aj keď teraz iba polovica Beast in Black žije vo Fínsku, stále sa považujeme za kapelu so základňou vo Fínsku, takže je to trochu ako rodinné turné. Videl som Sonata naživo v Maďarsku nedávno a hovoril som si, že by boli perfektní pre turné k štvrtému albumu. Tento nový album je pre nás veľmi dôležitý a mať ich so sebou bude niečo veľmi špeciálne.
Už ste veľa koncertovali. Aká je vaša najkrajšia, najobľúbenejšia turné spomienka — niečo, čo vyčnieva nad všetkým ostatným?
Anton: Je toľko skvelých spomienok, že je ťažké si vybrať. Ale je tu špeciálna hrdosť, ktorá prichádza s headline turné. To posledné, Glory and the Beast s Gloryhammer, je asi moje obľúbené z pohľadu toho, ako som naň hrdý — plánovali sme ho starostlivo, tvrdo pracovali a podarilo sa presne tak, ako sme si predstavovali. Ten pocit zadosťučinenia je odmenou.
Okrem toho sme odohrali vyše 400 koncertov za desať rokov a keď sa obzrieš späť, vidíš ten progres. Dodá ti to sebavedomie do ďalších piatich či desiatich rokov — uvedomíš si, že keď plánuješ správne, veci často dopadnú tak, ako majú. Turné s Nightwish boli ďalším vrcholom — absolvovali sme s nimi viacero turné v Európe, Latinskej Amerike a dokonca aj v Japonsku. Pre mňa osobne je však Japonsko vždy niečo špeciálne. Atmosféra, kultúra — plná kontrastov a ja to milujem. Tieto koncerty sú medzi mojimi najobľúbenejšími spomienkami.
Maté: Cítim to rovnako. Odohrali sme viac než 400 koncertov, čo je veľa. Naše prvé headline turné po From Hell With Love bolo veľký míľnik — prvýkrát sme vystúpili zo „support“ sveta. Bolo to super úspešné turné a ukázalo, že to vieme ustáť sami. Najnovšie headline turné, Glory and the Beast, to posunulo ešte vyššie — väčšie pódiá, super produkcia, viac než polovica koncertov vypredaná. To bol pre nás obrovský úspech.
Z osobného hľadiska boli severoamerické turné splneným snom. Chcel som hrať v USA od 14 rokov. Nebolo jednoduché sa tam dostať — najskôr sme mali ponuku od HammerFall pred COVIDom, to sa presunulo a zrušilo. Ale napokon sme to dokázali s vlastným headline turné. Nevedeli sme, čo čakať, ale návštevnosť bola lepšia, než sme dúfali. Turné Amerikou na jar a v lete, chodiť von v tričku bez rukávov namiesto zimnej bundy — to je príjemná zmena!
A ako povedal Anton, prvé turné s Nightwish bolo nezabudnuteľné. Bolo to naše prvé veľké turné a keďže máme spoločný management, všetko išlo hladko. Mali sme malý tím, v podstate sme používali crew Nightwish, vďaka čomu to bolo celé bez stresu. Hrať pre desiatky tisíc ľudí každý večer — na to sa nezabúda.
Turné môže byť fyzicky náročné — málo spánku, neustále cestovanie, hranie každý večer. Ako sa udržujete vo forme počas dlhších turné?
Anton: Musíš si vybudovať vlastnú rutinu. Kľúč je jednoduchý: nepi príliš veľa, spi dosť a neponocuj. Všetci sme to už zažili, ale rýchlo zistíš, že odpočinok je základ. Môžeš si dať pohár vína alebo saké, pozrieť film, oddychovať v buse — ale choď spať včas. Spánok je tajná ingrediencia. Keď si oddýchnutý, zvládneš všetko. Keď nie si, aj malé problémy sa zdajú obrovské. Takže spi, jedz zeleninu a oddychuj — to je kľúč.
Maté: Každý má inú rutinu, ako sa udržať fit. Milujem turné a snažím sa byť v dobrej forme — niekedy idem behať alebo sa len dlho prechádzať a spoznávať mesto. Piť veľa vody je zásadné, najmä na turné. Znie to ako totálny základ, ale robí to veľký rozdiel. A úprimne, občasná párty je tiež dôležitá. Ak len pracuješ a nie je žiadna zábava, aj turné môže byť nudné. Tie veselé momenty — párty, smiech, dobrodružstvá — robia každé turné zapamätateľné.
Prichádzate na miesta konania často už ráno. Využívate ten čas na spoznávanie miest, šport alebo turistiku?
Anton: Áno, zvyčajne máme dosť času pred zvukovkou. Yannis a Maté niekedy športujú — hrávali basketbal počas voľných dní vždy, keď sme našli ihrisko blízko venue. Atte je zas fanatik do frisbee golfu — nosí svoje disky, má svoju veľmi špecifickú mikinu a ide hrať, keď môže. Ja som skôr „food turista“. Možno preto som tak pribral, ale našťastie som už schudol asi 10 kg. Rád skúšam miestne reštaurácie a nápoje, pozerám suvenírové obchody a nosím darčeky domov. To je môj typ cestovania.
Maté: Ja som určite turista kapely. Keď sme v meste, kde som nikdy nebol, rád chodím von — poprechádzať sa, pozrieť pamiatky, prípadne ísť na menšiu túru. Ale na európskych turné som väčšinu veľkých miest už videl, takže často riešim skôr kapelové veci. Bývam neďaleko odtiaľto, takže v tejto oblasti som už bol veľakrát. Ale ak budem mať čas, možno sa pôjdem prejsť aj dnes. Turné môže byť veľmi pracovné, ale keď cestujeme na nové kontinenty, vždy si spravím čas na menšie objavovanie. Musíš si svoju cestu farebne dotvárať — to robí dobrodružstvo dobrodružstvom, nie iba prácou.
Anton (na redaktora): Mimochodom, máte tu nejaké špeciálne vianočné nápoje? Počas týchto zimných európskych turné rád skúšam miestne sezónne nápoje — napríklad varené víno alebo glühwein. Máte niečo podobné na Slovensku?
(Redaktor vysvetľuje o Tatratea — slovenskom bylinnom likéri od 28 % do 72 % — a že mu raz povedali, že je lepší než Jägermeister.)
Anton: Znie to ako niečo, čo musím vyskúšať!
Turné tiež znamená dlhé obdobia mimo rodiny. Ako balansujete život na cestách s rodinným životom a staráte sa o duševnú pohodu?
Anton: Udržiavať kontakt je najdôležitejšie. Pošli správu alebo zavolaj každý deň — jednoducho udržuj spojenie. A ako som hovoril, odpočinok je kľúč. Staraj sa o telo aj myseľ a buď v kontakte s milovanými. To ťa drží pri zemi.
Maté: Pre mňa je to trochu ťažšie, pretože mám dve malé deti — deväť a sedem rokov — a manželku. Na tomto turné som s nimi nemal veľa času sa poriadne spojiť, nie kvôli internetu, ale preto, že sa toho dialo strašne veľa. Rád s nimi mávam dlhšie videohovory, a to sa zatiaľ veľmi nedalo. Ale zajtra hráme v Maďarsku a prídu na koncert. Pôjdem pred koncertom na pár hodín domov, strávim čas s nimi a to veľmi pomôže. Nie je to jednoduché, ale vieme, ako to zvládať — je to súčasť života, ktorý sme si vybrali.
Na odľahčenie: v jednom staršom rozhovore ste sa všetci okamžite zhodli, že keby ste stroskotali na opustenom ostrove, Yannis by zomrel ako prvý. Prečo?
Anton: (smiech) Chceš na to odpovedať?
Maté: (smiech) Myslím, že len tak, proste preto. Myslím, že Yannis by povedal to isté o sebe. On asi vie prečo — je lepšie, keď to vysvetlí on než aby sme ho ohovárali!
Anton: Ale áno, určite by súhlasil.
Vaše piesne miešajú rôzne príbehy — manga, fiktívne svety, osobné témy — čo dáva fanúšikom veľa priestoru na interpretácie. Aká je najdivokejšia alebo najnepresnejšia fanúšikovská teória, ktorú ste o svojej hudbe videli?
Anton: Veľmi to nesledujem, ale pamätám si YouTube komentáre, kde sa fanúšikovia hádali, o čom je určitá pieseň. Niektorí tvrdili, že je o postavách z Berserku a ich milostnom príbehu — a ja som si hovoril: „To vôbec nie je Berserk pieseň!“ Ale to je krása umenia: každý môže mať vlastný výklad.
Die by the Blade je napríklad jedna z našich najpopulárnejších piesní a mnohí si myslia, že je o Gutsovi a Griffithovi. V skutočnosti je o Gutsovi a jeho vnútornom démonovi — Beast of Darkness. Je to dialóg medzi jeho vonkajším ja a monštrom vnútri. Dokonca sme urobili lyric video, aby to bolo jasné — ukazuje len Gutsa a „Beasta“, bez Griffitha. Ale ľudia si to aj tak interpretujú inak — a to je v poriadku. Hlavné je, že nimi hudba rezonuje.
Je niečo, čo by ste radi odkázali slovenským fanúšikom pred dnešným koncertom?
Anton: V prvom rade ďakujeme za rozhovor a skvelé otázky. A fanúšikom — ďakujeme za podporu počas všetkých tých rokov. Dúfame, že vám dnes dáme koncert, na ktorý nezabudnete.
Maté: Som veľmi rád, že sme to tentokrát dotiahli sem. Pred dvoma rokmi sme mali hrať s Hollywood Vampires, ale vtedy sa to nepodarilo. Takže teraz je to niečo ako dlho očakávaný návrat. Je to tri alebo štyri roky, čo sme naposledy hrali na Slovensku, a dúfam, že to nebude ďalšie tri či štyri, kým sa vrátime. Ďakujeme všetkým, ktorí dnes prídu — dáme do toho všetko.
Beast in Black: “You have to color your journey — that’s what makes it an adventure, not just a job.”
Between anime inspirations, Diablo IV collaborations, and a schedule packed with shows alongside Helloween, Beast in Black never seems to slow down. Founder Anton Kabanen and bassist Maté Molnár caught up with us in Zvolen to talk about balancing the bright arcade energy of their sound with real-life challenges, the band’s intermezzo as a four-piece, and what fans can expect from the next album.
You are on tour with Helloween. How has the experience been so far, sharing the stage with such a legendary band?
Anton: We’re honored to be here, of course, and really enjoying the shows. There are always some challenges on the road, especially at the beginning of a tour, but this is what we do. We take it professionally and do our best.
Maté: Helloween has been one of my favorite bands for a long time, and, like Anton said, it’s an honor to be here with them. They’ve been very nice to us, and that’s not something to take for granted. We’ve done several support tours and also headlining tours, so you learn a lot about how to treat your support bands. So far, we’ve had a great experience — only five or six shows in, with many still ahead — but we’re looking forward to all of them.
After those first few shows, have you had a chance to watch Helloween’s full performance? And do you have a favorite song from their set?
Maté: Two shows ago, Yannis and I got to watch almost their entire show. Even during sound checks, we could see it’s a huge production — more than two hours long — and it was a great experience to watch the whole thing. They play some songs that they rarely perform live, which is exciting for a fan like me. For example, We Burn was a surprise. I also love Power, and A Little Too Much from the new album — that’s a great one too. It’s hard to pick just one; there are so many good songs in their set.
Every band has its own pre-show rituals. What’s yours?
Anton: I usually warm up by playing guitar — that’s my routine. And I take a glass of sake, Japanese rice wine. That’s about it for me before going on stage.
Maté: Nothing very specific for me personally, but as a band, we have a little something before the shows. It actually changed a bit a couple of shows ago, since we had a lineup change during this tour. That affected a few things, including our pre-show moment. But that’s something we keep to ourselves — it’s our little inner thing.
You already mentioned a lineup change, which you’ve announced but haven’t really explained. Can you share a bit more about what happened?
Anton: We agreed not to comment further on it for now. There are, of course, reasons behind it, but things happen the way they are meant to happen. We’re doing our best under challenging circumstances, and I’m optimistic that everything will ultimately turn out for the better. We’re also in the middle of producing our fourth album, so naturally, it affects that too, but we’re still keeping on schedule with the label. Things are rolling as they should.
Maté: Yeah, there’s a reason we don’t talk about the reasons. It’s unfortunate that it happened after ten years — almost exactly ten years since the band was formed — but this is a new chapter in the band’s life. Maybe for good. Let’s see.
How have you adapted to playing as a four-piece? That must bring some changes to your performance.
Anton: It’s actually kind of nostalgic, because the first ever Beast in Black show, back in November 2015, was as a four-piece. It was me, Maté, Sami Hänninen on drums, and Yannis on vocals. So in a way, it feels like going back to our roots. Since I wrote the songs, playing them isn’t a problem — the only extra challenge is the guitar solos, which I now improvise every night. One night they sound one way, another night completely different — sometimes even a bit jazzy by accident! But I enjoy it. The chemistry on stage is still there, and that’s what matters most. After the first four-piece show, fans came to the merch area and told us how much they enjoyed it — they didn’t even mention the lineup change. That felt very genuine, and it motivates us to keep going.
You’re in the middle of a tour. Is there already a plan to find a replacement, or are you waiting until later?
Anton: When there’s something to tell, we’ll announce it. For now, we’d rather keep a bit of mystery around it. We’ll reveal things when the time feels right. We don’t want to fuel unnecessary speculation — we just focus on what matters and move forward.
You’ve already played in Slovakia a few times before. How do you find the Slovak audience compared to other places?
Anton: For me, a Beast in Black audience is a Beast in Black audience, no matter where we are. That’s how I see it. I really enjoy exploring local culture when we have time — the differences from home, the local food and drinks, all those experiences make touring more memorable. But once we go on stage, even if it’s a Helloween crowd, for that one hour it feels like it’s entirely a Beast in Black show.
Maté: Yeah, we played here with Rhapsody during one of our first tours outside Finland and Germany, back in 2018. I still have great memories of that show. Since then, we’ve returned to Bratislava two or three times, and it’s always a nice crowd. Even though it’s a Helloween show this time, we’re special guests, and that means a lot of our fans are here too. I think it’s going to be a great night.
There’s a fan question: would you ever do a gear rundown, like Guitar Pro does, to show what you’re playing and using?
Anton: I don’t think we’ve done one yet, but our setup is quite simple. We use the Neural DSP Quad Cortex for amp modeling, and I play ESP guitars — I used to play Jacksons and might go back one day. I don’t have any exclusive deal, because I like the freedom to use what feels right at any time. So it’s really just the Quad Cortex and ESPs for me. Our crew handles most of the other gear and playback stuff. The playback comes from Pro Tools, that´s commonly used.
Maté: Yeah, for bass I use custom instruments from a Slovak company called GV Guitars. They’re actually made not far from here, in Gúta. So my basses are truly local tonight!
Your latest single, Enter the Behelit, blends your usual sound with darker, fantasy-inspired tones. How did the collaboration with Diablo IV come about, and what do you think of music–gaming partnerships like this?
Anton: It was a big surprise when we were approached for that, and an honor to be part of it. For me personally, it was a dream come true because I’ve been a fan of Berserk since around 2005. It was the first official collaboration that connected Berserk and Blizzard, so it was a very emotional project. We didn’t have much time to prepare, but we’re proud of how the video turned out — it mixes animation and live band footage beautifully. The director, Katri Ilona Koppanen, did an amazing job. The huge hand prop in the video, for example, was built by one person in a very short time. Everything came together quickly but impressively.
Maté: Blizzard’s main office is in Los Angeles, but they also have one in London, and a few people from their London team actually came to our show there after the collaboration. That was a really nice gesture — it showed that they appreciated the project as much as we did.
There’s a fascinating contrast between Beast in Black’s energetic, almost arcade metal and Diablo’s grim Gothic atmosphere. How did you balance those worlds?
Anton: As the songwriter, I didn’t really have to adjust much. They were looking for Berserk-related music, and I already had Enter the Behelit in progress for the fourth album. I sent them the lyrics and an early version, and they liked it right away. The bigger challenge was the video production, because we wanted to include clear Berserk elements — like the Behelit itself. The backdrop we now use on stage features a Berserk-inspired design, showing Guts in his armor. For me, as a fan, that’s incredibly special.
You’re known for your strong pop culture influences — from manga and anime to that “arcade metal” sound. What’s your relationship with pop culture, and do you have any guilty pleasures in that area? (Anton misunderstood question a bit and answered about creative process of the band)
Anton: It’s always tricky to explain the creative process — why certain things resonate and inspire you. Anything that hits the right emotional chord can become part of a song. I’ve had this creative drive since I was a kid, writing songs just because I had to. It’s not a choice; it’s something you must do. It has to come from passion, love, and dedication. That’s what keeps me going.
If you could compare each band member to a fictional pop culture character, who would it be?
Anton: That’s a new one! I’ve always loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so I’d say we’re like them — a team of four right now. I’d be Leonardo, my childhood favorite. I think since we are currently four-piece band, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would work well.
Maté: It’s funny you say that, because at the beginning of our career we actually performed in Ninja Turtle masks during Crazy, Mad, Insane! We’ve also dressed as Luigi and Mario, and even monkeys. So yeah, the turtle comparison fits perfectly.
Anton: True! And Yannis sometimes calls Atte “Bowser” from Super Mario, so that all connects somehow.
There’s a new album planned for 2026. Can you share where you are in the process and what we can expect?
Anton: It won’t be spring — it’ll be released in autumn, around our headline tour. Yannis has already recorded his vocals, and we still have some keyboard and guitar solos to finish, but the basics are there. I even brought a portable studio setup on tour so I can keep working on it. It’s in good shape, and progress continues even while we’re traveling.
Maté: There will be ten brand new songs — we’re not including the two standalone singles from this and last year. So people can expect ten fresh tracks.
Anton: Some singles will come out first, and we just had a meeting with our label in London to plan the rollout. We can’t announce exact dates yet, but it’ll definitely happen in 2026.
You’re planning to tour with Sonata Arctica as special guests. How does it feel having such a legendary Finnish band supporting you?
Anton: It’s a bit surreal! With my previous band, Battle Beast, I toured with Sonata Arctica back in 2012, and they were super nice guys. As a teenager, I listened to their songs on the radio, amazed by the melodies and guitar work. So it’s unbelievable to now be in a position where they’re joining us as special guests. We’re honored and happy it could happen — we even share the same management, which helped make it real.
Maté: I’ve always been a fan of Sonata Arctica. Even though only half of Beast in Black currently lives in Finland, we still see ourselves as a Finnish-based band, so it’s like a family tour in a way. I saw Sonata live in Hungary not long ago and thought they’d be a perfect fit for our fourth album tour. This new record is very important for us, and having them along will make it something really special.
You’ve toured a lot over the years. What’s your dearest or favorite tour memory — something that stands out above all the rest?
Anton: There are so many great memories that it’s hard to choose. But there’s a special pride that comes with the headlining tours. The most recent one, Glory and the Beast with Gloryhammer, is probably my favorite from a pride perspective — we planned it carefully, worked hard, and pulled it off exactly as envisioned. That sense of achievement is rewarding.
We’ve also done over 400 shows in ten years, and when you look back, you see the progress. It gives you confidence for the next five or ten years — you realize that if you plan properly, things tend to turn out as intended. Touring with Nightwish was another highlight — we did multiple tours with them in Europe and Latin America, and even in Japan. For me personally, though, Japan is always something special. The atmosphere, the culture — it’s full of contrasts, and I love that. Those shows are some of my favorite memories.
Maté: I feel the same way. We’ve done more than 400 shows, which is a lot. Our first headlining tour after From Hell With Love was a big milestone — the first time stepping out of that “support band bubble.” It was a super successful tour and proved that we could stand on our own. The latest headlining run, Glory and the Beast, took it to another level — bigger stages, great production, more than half the shows sold out. That was a huge success for us.
From a personal perspective, the North American tours were a dream come true. I’d wanted to play in the U.S. since I was 14. It wasn’t easy to get there — it started with an offer from HammerFall before COVID, which got postponed and canceled. But we finally made it happen with our own headline tour. We didn’t know what to expect, but the turnout was better than we imagined. Touring America in spring and summer, walking around in sleeveless shirts instead of winter coats — that’s a nice change!
And like Anton said, the first tour with Nightwish was unforgettable. It was our first major tour, and since we share management, everything went smoothly. We had a small crew back then, basically using Nightwish’s team, which made things so relaxed. Playing for tens of thousands every night — that’s something you don’t forget.
Touring can be physically demanding — lack of sleep, constant travel, playing every night. How do you stay in shape during longer tours?
Anton: You have to develop a personal routine. The key is simple: don’t drink too much, sleep enough, and don’t stay up until morning. We’ve all done that before, but you learn quickly that rest is essential. You can have a glass of wine or sake, watch a movie, relax in the bus — but go to bed in time. Sleep is the secret ingredient. When you’re well-rested, you can handle anything. When you’re not, even small problems feel huge. So sleep, eat your vegetables, and rest — that’s the key.
Maté: Everyone has different routines to keep themselves in shape. I love touring, and I try to stay fit — sometimes I go jogging or just walk long distances to explore cities. Drinking plenty of water is vital, especially on tour. It sounds basic, but it makes a big difference. And honestly, the occasional party is important too. If you’re just working nonstop with no fun, even touring can get boring. Having those colorful moments — parties, laughter, adventures — makes every tour memorable.
You often arrive at venues early in the day. Do you use that time for sightseeing, sports, or exploring the cities you visit?
Anton: Yeah, we usually have quite a bit of time before soundcheck. Yannis and Maté sometimes play sports — they used to play basketball on days off whenever we found a court near the venue. Atte is into frisbee golf — he carries his discs, wears his very unique hoodie and goes off to play whenever he can. I’m more of a “food tourist.” That might be the reason I gained so much weight, but thankfully, I already lost about 10 kg. I like to try local restaurants and drinks, explore souvenir shops, and bring gifts home for my family. That’s my kind of sightseeing.
Maté: I’m definitely the tourist of the band. Whenever we’re in a city I’ve never been to, I like to go out and explore — walk around, visit landmarks, or even hike if it’s possible. But on European tours, since I’ve already seen most major cities, I often focus on band work instead. I actually live not far from here, so I’ve been to this area many times. Still, if I get the chance today, maybe I’ll go out. Touring can be very work-focused, but when we travel to new continents, I make it a point to explore more. You have to color your journey — that’s what makes it feel like an adventure, not just a job.
Anton (to interviewer): By the way, do you have any special Christmas drinks here? On these winter European tours, I like to try local seasonal drinks — like hot wine or glühwein. Do you have something like that in Slovakia?
(Interviewer explains about Tatratea, a Slovak herbal liqueur ranging from 28% to 72%, and that he once was told it´s far better than Jägermeister.)
Anton: Sounds like something we have to try then!
Touring also means long stretches away from family. How do you balance your life with family life and maintain your mental well-being?
Anton: Staying in touch is the most important thing. Send a message or make a call every day — just keep the line open. And like I said before, rest is key. Take care of your body and mind, and stay connected with your loved ones. That’s what keeps you grounded.
Maté: It’s a bit harder for me because I have two small kids — they’re nine and seven — and my wife. On this tour, I haven’t had much time to connect properly, not because of internet problems but just because there’s been so much happening. I like to have longer, focused video calls with them, and that hasn’t really been possible yet. But tomorrow we play in Hungary, and they’ll come to the show. I’ll go home for a few hours before that, spend time with them, and that’ll help a lot. It’s not easy, but we know how to handle it — it’s part of the life we chose.
A lighter question: in an old interview, you all instantly agreed that if you were stranded on a desert island, Yannis would be the first to die. Why?
Anton: (laughs) Do you want to answer that?
Maté: (laughs) I think just because. I think Yannis would say the same thing himself. He probably knows why — it’s better if he explains it than us bad-mouthing him!
Anton: But yeah, I’m sure he’d agree.
Your songs mix different storylines — manga, other fictional worlds, and personal themes — which gives fans a lot of room for interpretation. What’s the wildest or most inaccurate fan theory you’ve seen about your music?
Anton: I don’t follow that too much, but I remember seeing YouTube comments where fans debated what certain songs were about. Some people were arguing that one song was based on Berserk characters and their love story — and I was like, “That’s not a Berserk song at all!” But that’s the beauty of art: everyone can have their own interpretation.
Die by the Blade, for example, is one of our most popular songs, and many people think it’s about Guts and Griffith. But it’s actually about Guts and his inner demon — the Beast of Darkness. It’s a dialogue between his outer self and the monster within. We even made the lyric video to make that clear — it only shows Guts and the Beast, no Griffith at all. But people still interpret it differently, and that’s fine. As long as the music resonates with them, that’s what matters.
Is there anything you’d like to say to your Slovak fans before tonight’s show?
Anton: First of all, thank you for the interview and for the great questions. And to the fans — thank you for all the support over the years. We hope to give you a show tonight that you’ll remember forever.
Maté: I’m really happy we made it here this time. Two years ago, we were supposed to play with Hollywood Vampires, but it didn’t happen. So this feels like a long-awaited return. It’s been three or four years since we last played in Slovakia, and I hope it won’t be another three or four until we’re back. Thanks to everyone coming tonight — we’ll give it our all.
