Varg is back with the newest record. Hati and Managarm were so kind and answered my questions not only about the album.
Hey guys. So happy to be able to talk to you. The new album is out. How does it feel?
Hey, no problem. It’s a pleasure. Our last Album Guten Tag was released more than 3 years ago, we are all looking forward to unleash our new beast „The End of all Lies“. Of course every relase is exciting, but such a long time without new Varg Stuff... this is a whole new level for us.
Can you compare the newest record with the previous work? Is there anything that you haven´t used before?
Well, the basics are the same. Very heavy, angry Varg tunes with catchy melodies. When you hear the Album you will know, that this is VARG. What’s different to the previous ones is we have added some clean vocals every now and then. Instead of GT we had a lot of time to create the new Album. So we were able to concentrate much more on each song. The Result is nothing more than the best Varg Songs ever. We are 100% satisfied with the Album. Also the female Voice of Anna Murphy (Eluveitie) in Dance of the Death is something new, we haven’t used before in our songs.
The album is called “The End of All Lies“. How did you come up with this title? What kind of lies should be ended?
We are all surrounded by lies everyday! Politics, Media, Social Networks and of course your own lies, which you are telling yourself everyday. While listening to our Album, it’s your choice which lie you want to end. Be true to yourself and start asking questions. The world is not black and white, despite some people are trying to make us believe so.
How long did you actually work on the release. I mean since the very first “scratches“.
The songwriting started in early 2013 and was finished around summer 2014. Then we began to bring everything together in the studio, which also took about a year. We perfectionated and polished every song until we found them to be perfect.
I found the cover of your album also in German. Is it released also in German language? Or are there two versions?
After playing our North America Tour in 2012, lots of people told us how much they love our music, but what a shame it is, that they dont understand the lyrics. So we decided to release the Album in both languages, that every none German can dive deeper into our lyrical and musical concept. We are releasing a double CD Digipak that contains the German as well as the complete English bonus version of the album. The Limited Edition also includes a third CD with the instrumental versions of all the songs.
What were the inspirations for the songs and lyrics of the new record?
We all have lots of different influences. I can´t say one band that we listened to during songwriting. One thing I remember is, that Managarm wrote the song „Rain of Ash“ right after he visited a Katatonia concert. You can definately hear that in the song, haha.
Can you comment on the cover artwork? You´re putting the kneeling guy to death on it. Why?
The Guy on the Cover is not only a liar, he represents the lie! Look at his split tongue for example. Besides there are a couple more symbols on him that have a specific meaning. We just wanted to show „The End of all Lies“ on a very badass way. And I think it worked.
Varg means wolf in Swedish if I am correct. In one of your songs you also sing “we´re the wolfpack“. Are you the “wolfpack“ as a a band?
First of all the Band is the Wolfpack. But at the same time, all of our followers are part of the Pack! We want to invite everyone to join the Wolfpack. It just about having a free mind and spirit. We know that we wouldn´t be that succesful, if we didnt have that huge support from our fans. So for us, Varg and Fans are one growing Family. We are the Wolfpack! Together we are strong.
How did you actually come up with the name of your band?
That was Fenrier´s idea back when he and Freki started the band. I don’t know how exactly he came up with it. It’s definately not a Burzum reference though, haha.
Are you interested in pagan mythology as well?
We used to listen to lots of Pagan Bands and of course we´re interested in this theme. But we are all getting older and interests change. Our music changed from Wolfszeit (our first record) to the latest ones because we don’t want to repeat ourselves over and over again. But I have to say: we know our roots and of course there´s still some Pagan left in our hearts. For example the Song Einherjer is a typical pagan song. And we all love it! I think we created a very unique modern form of pagan metal. We like to call it Wolf Metal.
I noticed that several bands are used to using the red and black colours on their faces. What does it represent?
That is our War Paint. You won’t believe it, but off stage we are all quite nice guys. The warpaint helps us, to set all the agression and power free we need for the show. It’s kind of a ritual. When we start painting our faces, our mood is changing. We are getting more focused! It really helps. And it looks badass as fuck, haha!
Could your Slovakian fans see you in a concert?
We have already played in Slovakia in 2010. But unfortunately we had no chance to repeat this really great Show so far. So, if there are some Slovakian Promoters. Here we are! Feel free to contact our Booker! We are ready to come back!
Anything you would like to tell in the end?
We want to say thank you to all our Fans out there! It is great to see, that the Wolfpack is becoming bigger and bigger and we hope to return to Slovakia soon!!
