ROZHOVORY

Ladies and gentlemen, it´s interview time again. This time we´re bringing up this interesting interview with an amazing Swedish musician  lt Nalle Påhlsson and his brand new release called  ROYAL MESS .

Hello Nalle. I´m so proud to be finally able to talk to you. Your new solo album is out. Are you satisfied with the result?

Hello there !!! I´m happy to be part of Hellmagazine !
Yes, I´m very satisfied with my album. It has become exactly the way I wanted it to be !

I´ve just called it as your solo album. Is it correct to call it like this?

Yes, it is. It´s an album made by me and I brought in my friends to help me out with it. I´m very happy that they all wanted to join !

You started writing and composing music for Royal Mess actually many years ago.
Was it difficult to finally find time to work on your own music?

Yes, it was very often hard to find the time to finish the songs. I have so much other things to do and today it´s not very easy to be a musician in an economical aspect even at this pretty good level I´m at. It´s like: ”Time is money, but money is also time ! I would like to buy some time.......But where´s the money ?”

I like actually the name of the project. You combined two quite different aspects or elements together. Was it also your intention?

I like it too ! I think the name reflects very much of how my life has been and is today and also how I see the world in current situation. There are so many things that is so great and beautiful, but at the same time it feels like things are going towards chaos and a hell of a mess! But the name also reflects some of my interest for movies about Kings and Queens from the middle-age. Kings and Queens to me also belongs to history and mythology. To me they´re also part of many countries culture. But today my life is not a mess  –  I feel like a royalty !! ;-)

In your point of view, does the title represent the music?

Not really I guess. But it sounds and looks cool to me. I think the name represents a part of me, who I´ve been and who I am today and I think the logo looks great !

What were the main inspirations for this album? Your life and things you´ve experienced?

I made the decision to record an album of my own when I quit the drinking in early 2011. Of course I´ve had it in mind for many years before that, but it was time for a change in my life, to overcome my bad habits and use my time to do something good instead  –  for my own sake in the first place.
And yes, I´ve used a lot of my own experiences for the lyrics. My friend and colleaugue Anders Lundquist has written and helped me out with most of the lyrics, but much of the topics, ideas and words come from myself. But Anders has this unique way of putting everything straight. He´s great !

The titles and lyrics of the tracks, mostly the ones like “Hell City“, “Mr. Freedom“ or “Gold Digger“ remind me of some kind of real life situations. Are there any real stories behind them?

Yes, they are all, or both, true stories. ”Hell City” and ”Gold Digger” are both about the same girl/woman. I was totally blinded by love and I lost about 12.000 usd in 8 months. And I´m not rich you know, but at this time I had sold a house and for once I had a bit more money at this point. She was clever and I was stupid! She knew how to manipulate me. Most of it I see as my own fault for being such an idiot, but she still owes me money for a breast surgery which we made an agreed on that she would give me half back, about 2500 usd. Today she claims that the whole sum for the surgery was a gift. That´s a total lie ! So this is my payback ! I will never get that money back anyway, so she will, in this way, help me out with some promotion ! :-D
The song ”Breakout” is about another chaotic relation I had about 7-8 years ago. The sentence ”I was given my salvation through some puches in the face” is actually true. She once hit me so hard with fist punches in the face in the bathroom that I fell down in the bathtub ! Maybe this says more about me than her ? What do I know....? I´ve been lost ! But now I can see I´ve found my way home.

There are actually many guests on the album. Can you comment on the collaboration with them? And was it you who decided to invite so many great musicians for this album?

I wanted my friends and colleagues to join -   and that´s it. I asked them all by myself to join. I have played with everyone of them in one or another way. The only one I haven´t played with is actually Kristian Niemann, but on the other hand I know him a bit and we both have connections to the band Therion. Kee Marcello I´ve known since 1982. Ian Haugland I´ve played with a lot and also Mats Levén etc etc....
Of course I know that many of the guests will bring some more attention to my album, but I have also brought in some of my childhood friends like Micke Hujanen and my good friend Lasse Andersson and Igna Jover from Spain  –  Have you ever heard of them ? Guess not, but they are friends by heart and they are fantastic musicians  –  That´s why they are there !

Was it difficult, I mean production-wise to record the material with so many different musicians? They´re also busy I guess.

No, with the technique of today you´re able to record your parts at home on your computer whenever you´ve got the time and then send the files by the Internet. The only one who came home to me and recorded in my homestudio was Henrik Bergqvist from The Poodles. The others I kept in contact with over the phone and gave instructions that way and then they sent me the files.

“This album marks a new chapter in my life!” This is written in the booklet of the album. What do you mean with the “new chapter” of your life?

I´m a 100% sober today, I´m both healthier and happier than ever. The new chapter is also about, as I mentioned earlier, to do something good and creative instead of wasting your time.. When being drunk or having  hangovers you get nothing done and you´re not a very good person to deal with either.....

I like the pictures of you wearing the crown. Do you sometimes feel like a king ?

Yes ! -   Everyday ! Having my friends, my family, my cats, the music and my home ! When it comes to money I´m not rich, but in life  –  I feel very rich !

You have already performed many different kinds of music. What kind of music does really influence you as an artist and as a person?

The classic Hardrock with bands such as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, KISS and many more are the foundation of my whole background. Later on, in the beginning of the 80´s I started to listen a lot the American AoR bands such as Journey, Foreigner and ToTo. But I love very much different kinds of music. I also like a lot of soul and stuff like Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire and so on...

I know that you´re also quite busy. So many projects and gigs going. Anyways, what kinds of hobbies do you have? How do you like spending your free time?

I´m a collector of KISS merchandise !!! I love it ! My room is totally full of KISS stuff ! KISS has meant so much to me, and they still do ! My free time I mostly spend at home taking it easy with my son and daughter. Sometimes I read biographiess from my old idols. The last one I read was ”No Regrets” by Ace Frehley I think.

I´ve read you´re interested in history. Is it true?

I´m not an expert, but interested  –  Yes !

Thank you so much for your time and this interview and good luck to your new album!

Thanks to you as well !
Tack så mycket – as we say in Swedish ! :-)
